J’hpp nf, Rack, Pa. • dedication The atom bomb of 1849 exploded when James Marshall, a pioneer carpenter, discovered golden flecks of a prized mineral in California. The yellow blaze of this momentous discovery became the goal which lun d the 49’ers on their trek across the country in search of sudden wealth. A century later the men and women of the United States are still searching for wealth, but they have learned that the dollar sign is not tin- only worthwhile standard of value. Through such men as Governor Janies Pollock of Pennsylvania, under whom a system of State Normal Schools was established, and Thomas II. Burrows, author of tin- Normal School Act, education has earned an honored place in the hearts and minds of all. To these men and the countless others who moved, just as the 49’ers of gold rush days, through hardship and adversity to their ultimate goal of standard teacher education, we dedicate this issue of the Saxigena. Dr. Dale W. Houk came to Slippery Rock in 1946, and since then he has been an outstanding figure on pur campus. After graduating from Park College in Missouri, he did his graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to assuming duties at Slippery Rock, Dr. Houk was Supervising Principal of the Forest Hills schools and Assistant County Superintendent of Allegheny County. His intelligent advice and pleasing personality have made him a friend to all students and faculty members. We sincerely hope that we may greet him as our president for many years to come. 2)ea t ajj 9ruibuictio+t DR. LEONARD S. DUNCAN This is tin- third year that we have the pleasure of extending a welcome to Dr. Leonard S. Duncan as Dean of Instruction. Dr. Duncan graduated from Geneva College and continued his studies as Columbia University and at the University of Pittsburgh. Before coming to Slippery Rock, he served as a teacher of English and as principal at Rochester, Pennsylvania, and as a teacher of English and as vice-principal at Peabody High School in Pittsburgh. He is continually working for the benefit of both the students and tin- college. The present student body, and the alumni as well, gratefully acknowledge his splendid leadership and cooperation. 2bean ojj Me+t MR. THOMAS T. Bassitt hit pay dirt on a pass from I’ram, Daniels on an aerial from Barron, and Murray on an end run. PHILLIPS AND CO. TROUNCE DETROIT TECH 42-13 Led by Bobby Phillips who scored three touchdowns, the Rockets completely outplayed and outscored the visiting Michigan eleven. In addition to Phillips’ tallies Daniels, Flick, and McCullough added six pointers. The “Toe” Bassett converted six straight times. ROCKETS NOTCH THIRD WIN—BEAT EDINBORO 20-0 Paced by the accurate throwing of “Blue” Barron, Rocket quarterback, and the tcriffic line play of Adamcyzk. McCarthy, McCrae, Gaserowski and Kovac, the Rockets smothered the willing but weak Edinboro gridders. CALIFORNIA TRIMS ROCKET GRIDDERS 27-0 Under the lights at Charleroi, for charity pur| osos, the Rockets received little but tricky reverses and fast end runs from the home eleven. The Rockets spent a busy night chasing small but speedy Mundell. Despite the score of 27-0, the Rockets did not fold up and collapse. They fought hard until the final gun, and California knew it had been in a ball game. ROCKETS OUT-FIGHT INDIANA AT HOMECOMING 26-20 In perhaps the most thrilling game witnessed at Thompson Field in many years, the Rockets snatched victory from apparent defeat. In the final minutes of play the Rocket team, under the brilliant leadership of Bill Barron, drove 7 yards, climaxed by Bob Flick’s smash off-tackle for the score. The entire Rocket squad deserves credit for this brilliant win. ROCKETS WIN INTERSECTIONAL BATTLE WITH DEFIANCE 21-7 After traveling to Defiance, Ohio, and trailing 7-0 at the half, the Rockets played flawless football to score 21 points in the second half and win going away. The 3 M’s standing for the married men: Moody, Murry and McCullough did the scoring with Bassett converting. MYTHICAL CLASS B’’ CHAMPS, HA1! ROCK 20—GROVE CITY 12 Ruining a 12-game winning streak, a Dad’s Day partisan crowd, and the entire sport’s year for the Grovers, the Rockets completely demoralized the Grovers. The Rockets scored 20 points in the first half and played brilliant defensive ball to the final whistle. This win can be accredited to outstanding team play and determination. ROCKETS SPLASH AND SLIDE TO WIN OVER CLARION On a field which resembled a rice paddy, the Rockets out-mudded the Clarionites for their 7th win of the season. Touchdowns by Flick Daniels on a beautiful pass from Phillips, and the running of “Scat” Melville proved too much for the Clarion lx ys. SHIPPENSBURG 7 SLIPPERY ROCK 0 In a hard-fought game marred by mud. unnecessary roughness, and jx or officiating the Rocket gridders closed a very successful season by dropping a close 7-0 game at Shippensburg.
