Headlines were hardly unnoticeable in 1972-73. Phrases like Munich massacre, Skyjack in San Francisco, McGovern drops Eagleton, Freezing temperatures to continue, and Nixon declares peace shouted from newspapers, magazines, and were heard on television and radio newscasts, calling attention to history being made all over the world. While students began filling out their fall schedules, tragedy befell the 1972 Summer Olympics, causing much soul searching into an age old and honored custom. The mourning of the seven Israeli athletes assassinated in Olympic Village hampered the joy of those competitors who won highest honors among those, American swimmer Mark Spitz, who received seven gold medals. The Bay Area Rapid Transit began it's long-awaited service in time to take A's fans to the World Series at the Coliseum. After defeating the Cincinnati Reds, the champions wallowed in champagne and the glory of a victory parade. December brought literally freezing weather to the Bay Area, the coldest recorded since 1930. Snow fell on campus for nearly one week, rain and bitter cold lasted for months. For the first time, many Skyline students were involved in voting in the national presidential election. Eight days after his second inauguration, President Nixon declared an official end to the longest war in United States history and hundreds of prisoners of war came home from Viet Nam. Disaster struck Skyline january 31, when a former student set fire to the Art and Homemaking Building. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment was lost in the fire. Among the cinders of the fire, a spark of initiative was found, and many forms of fund raising were planned and carried out. In May, an International Cultural and Arts Fair was staged to resupply the Art department. All-in-all, 1972-73 was a very exciting year.
