Coping efficiently with the greatest number
of students in Skyline history, lVlr. David
Swanson completed his first hectic year as a
principal. He had the nearly impossible task
of matching too many students with too few
teachers. Mr. Sidney Simonson, 'vice-
principal, worked out the Master Program
and balanced classes after the initial Mill
Day programming. Vice-Principal Wilma
Lorentz headed Zonta Club and girls'
discipline while Vice-Principal George
Benson directed teacher supervision at pre-
season and Oakland Athletic League
functions, as well as boys' discipline.
Principal David Swanson pauses on a tour of the campus to admire Skyline's view.

Organized to provide students with the
opportunity for complete self-scheduling, the
"Mill" was the first system of its kind to be
used in Oakland. The "Mill" was formed to
let students set up. programs to fit their
various needs. The purpose was to attempt
to stabilize class enrollment earlier, which
would eliminate many program changes. The
"lVlill" decreased the number of transfers
and increased the number of satisfied
students throughout the year.
Students gather outside the auditorium before going
through the "lVlill" to self-schedule.
At "Mill" conflict station, social science teacher Mr.
Maurice Besse and Principal David Swanson aid Dietra
Robinson, Jim Harper, Louis Kopecky, Nancy Peshon,
and Sally Lowell.
