Coached by Morris Shepherd and Mike Convis, the thinclads headed for a good showing in the North Bay League. Competing with strong con- tenders in Tamalpais and Santa Rosa, Drake placed its faith in returning let- terman from last year's cindermen and greatly improved members of former squads. During the first meet of the season, Rich Benz, Mike Healy, and Jack Rankin set three new school records. SOPHOMORE BASEBALL Hustling for Coach Bob Tropp- mann again this year, the Sophomore baseball team headed for a successful season with the winning of their opener against the Marin Catholic Wildkittens. The Sophs held an advantage in ex- perience, as many of last year's frosh- soph veterans returned to the Diamond. Though practice began late because of poor weather, the boys shaped up into a smoothly-functioning squad by the time their season was in progress. FRESHMAN BASEBALL The Frosh-Soph baseball tearr split this year into two separate squads, the freshmen playing under Coach Jack Renfro, a student teacher from San Francisco State. Though inexperienced, the boys showed promise of develop- ing into good varsity material in years to come. The untried nine looked good on the diamond and, improving with experience, worked well together as the season progressed.
