Drake's Varsity Baseball team, coached by George Cor- son, looked forward to a highly successful year. Starting the season by playing host to a strong Sacred Heart squad, the Pirates embarked on a twenty-five game schedule. By putting to good use consistent hitting and clean, snappy fielding, the Pirates hoped to bring home the first varsity pen- nant to be awarded to a Drake baseball team. 'Nr ' ' W. , 1 IVV. SOPHOMORE BASEBALL Hustling for Coach Bob Tropp- mann again this year, the Sophomore baseball team headed for a successful season with the winning of their opener against the Marin Catholic Wildkittens. The Sophs held an advantage in ex- perience, as many of last year's frosh- soph veterans returned to the Diamond. Though practice began late because of poor weather, the boys shaped up into a smoothly-functioning squad by the time their season was in progress. FRESHMAN BASEBALL The Frosh-Soph baseball tearr split this year into two separate squads, the freshmen playing under Coach Jack Renfro, a student teacher from San Francisco State. Though inexperienced, the boys showed promise of develop- ing into good varsity material in years to come. The untried nine looked good on the diamond and, improving with experience, worked well together as the season progressed.
