SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL FRESHMAN BASKETBALL SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL Under the coaching of Bob Maher, the Drake Sophomore basketball team enioyed the best season of any Drake basketball team, winning ten of their thirteen games. When 6'5 center, Bill Gallagher, moved up to the varsity the loss was taken in stride and the sophomores still car- ried on successfully. The sophomore' team did not compete in a league, but they held big victories over the Tam sophomores and Napa Junior Varsity at the end of their season. The big Tam JV's roved to be too P much, however, and the soph's went down to the Indians in a heart- breaker. E . Coach Fitzhenry's Little Pirates began their series of league encounters with a poor record in early practice games, most of which were against strong city teams. County triumphs over San Ra- fael, Marin Catholic and Tamalpais paced the C and D lightweights for the season, though they didn't fare well in League games. Drake's Varsity Baseball team, coached by George Cor- son, looked forward to a highly successful year. Starting the season by playing host to a strong Sacred Heart squad, the Pirates embarked on a twenty-five game schedule. By putting to good use consistent hitting and clean, snappy fielding, the Pirates hoped to bring home the first varsity pen- nant to be awarded to a Drake baseball team. 'Nr ' ' W. , 1 IVV.
