But with the days of drills and practice a team was formed that produced the top scorer in the North Bay League, Ron Cox. In view of their pre-season games the Pirates were not considered much of a league threat, but they surprised the experts with early season upsets over Tam and Napa. Running into one team after another who had a good night, the Pirates dropped their next six league games to end up in fourth place behind Santa Rosa, Vallejo and Tamalpais. Ronnie Cox, Drake junior guard, pushed T35 points through the mesh to win the NBL scoring crown. The Pirates seemed to come up to their potential in non-league games. The Drake hoopsters upset two of the toughest teams in the city, Balboa and St. Ignatius. Against Balboa Ronnie Cox tied the school individual scoring record with 3I points. In licking St. Ignatius, Drake beat the team rated by some experts as the top team in northern California, led by their All-American center. Drake basketball rooters can look forward to a cham- pionship contender next season with talented returning material from this year's starting line-up. 4 ' f-. g. Is it in?
