Over thirty B class mermen, under the capable direction of Drake's new swimming coach, Bob Fitzhenry, started their successful I955 season with an impressive victory over St. Ignatius, 60-5. Like the Varsity team, the B's schedule was composed of seventeen meets, including the North Bay league meet on May I4 and the North Coast Section meet on May 2O-2l at Santa Clara. Veterans from the 1954 B team were sprinters Mike Zeller, Rudi Golyn, Perry Cole, Geof Dell'Osso and Anton Holter. Returning backstrokers were Bill Purcell and Charles Shores. Other returnees were Brian Mahoney, medley man, and George Bottini, diver, and Paul Eiserich, breast-stroker. Begmmng the season on March Il, the Pirate mer men swam their way to a decnsuve victory over a well Coach Bob Fnzhenry stocked St. Ignatius team, 50 24. The fast pace was kept up throughout the fourteen practice meets which followed. On Saturday, May 14, the Plrate swimmers en tered league competition ln the North Bay League meet. The North Coast Section meet was scheduled for May 20 21 at Santa Clara. Coach Howard Glandon The Fall Varslty Tennls Team ably coached by Mr Howard son Although the team was at qulte a dusadvantage wrth only three returnmg lettermen, Norman Freed, Roger Damelson, and Paul Dubuc, Drake s varsity net squad managed to wan one of thelr four league matches, glvlng them a fourth place berth In Section 1 of the N B L Although the slngles, Norm Freed flrst Roger Damelson, second and Paul Dubuc, thurd tallred very few wlns rn league play their record over superlor competltlon deserved much credlt In doubles play lnexperlence showed as Dave Schmidt and Ron Fmmla, frrst doubles, Charles Sergler and Bert Damner, second doubles failed to wm the malorlty of their matches but showed promnse for future seasons Norm Freed, the team s only sensor and veteran of sax sea sons was elected captain for the fall season Drake's varsity tennis team, guuded by Coach Howard Glandon dropped their 1955 season opener to a strong George Washington Hugh School squad 6-0 ln the netsters previous season the Plrates fought hard but they had trouble wrth the league s unusually strong competition Thus competmon and the fact that the 1955 team was hampered by the loss of a few good players put the team In a trght spot when sprung practice began Returmng from the fall teamwere Paul Dubuc, Roger Damelson, Dave Schmldt Ron Funmla and Jack Clum eck Roundnng out the squad were several new comers to Drake s sprung tennls team , .
