The team began the season with a 54-46 victory over El Roncho but went on a losing streak after two meetings with Western of Las Vegas, Norwalk, Calhi, and Long Beach Wilson. Entering the La Habra Invitational Tournament, the cagers hit their stride. After a comparatively easy victory over Sunny Hills, the Spartans won a thriller over Calhi, 50-47, in the second round. Against El Rancho in the cham- pionship game, the cagers fought uphill in the fourth quarter to win, 64-60, and take the tournament. After Christmas, the Spartans downed Lowell, but lost successive games to Whittier, Montebello and Long Beach Milliken. In the league opener against Artesia January 18, the Spartans downed the Pioneers 54-44, with their finest defensive performance all season. Smashing victories over La Mirada and Pioneer were recorded in the first round of Suburban League play, with losses to Mayfair and La Seme. Going into the second round in the second place, the Spartans yielded to Artesia and Mayfair, but downed La Mirada and Pioneer for the second time. The final game with La Serna would decide who would advance to the C.I.F. AAA playoffs. With a. 54-51 overtime win over the Lancers, Sierra met the powerful Dominguez Dons on Febru- ary 26, 1963, and lost, ending the regular season. The season ended on an uptrend, however, just as it began, when the Varsity defeated the Alumni, 62-58. DARRELL FLANDERS Manager MR.
