Instead the English Department's aim this year was to teach all Short- ridge students the four basic Language Arts skillsg reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Through the Communications Club and Quill and Scroll, two English Department clubs, Shortridge students were able to reach further into English than the text books or class- rooms could take them. As Mrs. Jean Whitcraft, head of our English Department says, Here in the English Depart- ment we want to make the whole world more vital and vi- brant to the Shortridge student through their language. an-on-calf' '-Iinngull I ,,.....--n--------- - 9' if--ql.' . 4. lf 2' . -w 1 X ,. - - -tt, -1 . .- J' rv- qw ' . . , . .., Ms. Barry provides her third period English class with test booklets for the Sophomore l.Q. test. 15

What does an enthusiastic new Department Head plus a staff full of energetic and lively teachers equal? The Shortridge Math Department! This past year Shortridge was lucky enough to have as its Math Department Head, Mrs. Sandra Al-Amin. Mrs. Al-Amin says that the goal of the Math Department is to demonstrate why it is important and relev- ant to take math and how learn- ing math will be useful in everyday life after the comple- tion of high school. The Department's hope was to create a positive image for itself and encourage more student interest and participation. It was also planning to start a Math Club during the second semester.
