Government students recreate 1787 Convention The history department of Shortridge has for years consistently incorporated new methods to make it's classes relevant and interesting for the students. The 1973-74 program was geared to give students first-hand experience in the mechanics of self- government. We were fortunate to have Mrs. Woolens, who as a specialist in the field of the history of art, helped World History students become familiar with early Greek and Roman art. A new class in Anthropology was also instituted this year. Last year a dual book system was initiated in the history classes. Students used the book which was best suited to their comprehensive levels. This system was only moderately successful because teachers sometimes found it difficult to teach from two books at the same time. The two book system was continued but was modified so that each class was separated by history books. In addition both U. S. and World History, Economics, Psychology and Sociology classes were using texts other than the regulation I.P.S. books. In keeping with the current trend of everyone knowing all about the government, government classes at Shortridge experimented with an educational game called 1787. The game operated on the idea that students must draft a new constitution, following a simulated Convention of 1787. According to Mr. Payne, this type of activity produced more desired concepts of self-government than note memorization of isolated facts. Psychologist Brenda Whimpleberg gives Mr. Houston's psychology students an insight into the field of psychology within the schools. 20 .M
