I6 it Ki Foreign Language broadens cultural horizons To add new flavor to your life, study a foreign language. It will broaden your cultural horizons and deepen your understanding of other people. Shortridge students can study five different foreign languages: Spanish, German, Russian, French and Latin. With the help of the Indiana University Honors Program, presently in its twelfth year, students immersed themselves in their favorite foreign language during the summer of their junior year. Surviving rigorous preliminary competition, they lived in a foreign country with foreign parents who spoke the foreign language they were learning at Shortridge. If you were not inclined towards an overseas experience. you may want to participate in one of the foreign language clubs at Shortridge. Museum field trips and going to foreign language films and lectures with other club members are among the out-of- class itinerary. There are also pinatas to break, French cooking to eat. and a German Oktoberfest to celebrate. There is no greater compliment to another culture than to express yourself in its language. In an age where human brotherhood is the keynote, you owe it to yourself to learn to communicate in a foreign language and add a new dimension to your life and personality. Learn a foreign language. Shortridge develops international flair Cars, the people are just like in the pictures. The first person I saw was a man with short hair chewing gum. He was just what I expected. These were the first impressions of Ulla Hamalainen and Thomas Stropnicky. Ulla is an exchnage student from Helsinke, Finland. She is living with the Richard Blankenbakers Thomas is from Hamburg, Germany. Thomas is staying with the Rev. Edward Alley family. Ulla, Thomas and Korto Washington, who is from Liberia. are all here on the Youth for Understanding Program. Korto is living with the jesse Kennedys All three students stayed for a whole year and graduated from Shortridge. The second semester brought additional exchange students, Vesna Vistricki, Octavia Delgado, and Carlos Pessoa. Vesna is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Brown. Octavia Delgado hails from Buenos Aires. Argentina. While in the United States she is living with Dr. and Mrs. Walter Shaw. Carlos is a native of Rio de Ianiero, Brazil. Carlos is living with junior Brad Rector and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Bartou. He likes American girls, he ah said with a smile, but then he also likes hamburgers. Late in February, Ana QV V, Barballu came from Brazil and stayed 'Y W' It with the Robert Weber family. , Thomas Stropnicky. exchange- student from Hamburg, adds a little German zest to the SHS Soccer Club.
