New teachers Put spark in Soc. Studies For the first time at Shortridge, social studies will be required for four years, This is due to the new Innovative Pro- gram. Included in this team teaching program are three separate social studies programs for freshmen and four for sophomores. Three of the sophomore teams have been studying the lmprove- ment of Economic Life in the City and Urban Geography courses. Field trips have been a part of the activities of senior government classes. These government classes inter- viewed people involved in local govern- ment, so that students could better under- stand its principles of operation. Eight new teachers were added to the Social Studies Department, Which have been a definite asset , said lVlr. Thomas Payne, department head. The teachers added were: lVlr. Catus, lVliss lVlcDowell, lVlr. Beamon, lVlr. Bussel, lVlr. Higbee, IVlr. lVlarcus, lVlr. Tolin and lVliss Culloden. Serving as interns in the Social Studies Department were: lVlr. Kuhn, lVlr. Slaton, lVlr. Papesh, and lVlr. Hoskins. Wouldn't it be nice if your personal finances were the fun and games that they appear to be in lVlr. William lVlorgan's economics class?

Art, Music students color N-. ,gif 'i' --3' their world The Music Department, under the baton of Mr. Behling, went full blast this year. One good note was Mr. Pat Webb our guitarist-in-residence. He held his guitar workshops in the Music Department. A new project, undertaken by the department, was the sale of season tickets for all musical productions. This was met with approval by parents. Mr. Stomps conducted the A Cappella Choir and the Madrigals. Mr. Carter was the leader of The New Establishment, and Mr. Madjeski conducted the Drchestra. The Band was lead by the head of the department, Mr. Behling. The Art Department had a new head this year, Mr. Kantor. The only new staff member was Mr. Ian Fraser. He taught classes in Origami and Macrame. He brought with him a different approach to art with the use of notebooks. This year the Herron Art Museum offered two scholarships to two Shortridge sttidtwits: Oliver Eubanks and Mike Bryant. A Cappella Choir members sight read to pre- pare for concerts and the ChoraJ Classic.
