Thoureau, Shakespeare Motivate Students Several teachers joined the English department staff this past year. Along with teachers from previous years, they worked to give Shortridge En- glish students a foundation of knowl- edge to be used for the rest of their lives. Works of Chaucer, Shakespeare and Thoreau provided subject matter for quite a few conversations at Short- ridge. Many students were caught uttering an expressive To be or not to be . . over a sandwich in the cafeteria. Henry David Thoreau sparked many mind bending dis- cussions. An introduction to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales provoked the thoughts of many seniors. With a desire to communicate their ideas, Speech students struggled to improve their method of expression. Journalistically inclined students learned obiective news reporting as well as responsible editorializing. A field trip to the Indianapolis Star and News gave Journalism students an inside look at the making of a daily newspaper. Guest speakers also added to the variety of the class. After research papers, book re- ports, and grammar assignments, the department found time for extra cur- ricular activities. Great Books Clubs for Freshmen and upperclassmen, as well as Debate Club, Fiction Club and Quill and Scroll were sponsored by the English department. Above right: Standing at the head of the class, Anita Atkins gives a report, as Mrs. Schumacher checks the classes' papers. Students in Miss Debbie Culloden's English class are enraptured by a lecture on the literature of famous writers of the world. ,wb hd fir' . T L la w. - gd
