Tutoring Program Assists Troubled Math Students NIKKI SHAW VIES for extra points by putting her geometry proof on the board. While teaching classes in anything from general math to calculus, the teachers of the Shortridge Math De- partment employed new methods and devices to help in instruction. The drudgery of explaining problems on the blackboard was eliminated by using the new overhead projectors. A problem can be solved on a clear plas- tic sheet and is projected on a screen for the entire class at the same time. The mathematics tutoring program was a great help in aiding troubled students. Advanced math students gave up lunch and study periods to explain theory and applications in a manner that teachers could never have done in a class of more than twenty-five students. ■u . ' :? Robert Black Heads New Department Reorganized to produce more ef- ficient instruction in all the sciences, the Physical Science Department and Biology Department this year com- bined into one department headed by Robert L. Black. Advanced Biology pupils mated fruit flies to examine the genetic changes of generations of off- spring, while other pupils literally dug into their fetal pigs. More pro- jectuals, including vivid drawings of cell mitosis and meiosis, were added to the library of transparencies for the new overhead projectors. The Physics division of the department received new sets of books and new instru- ments. Physics students learned to operate the refraction plate for the ripple tank as well as an exploder to study the momentum changes in an explosion. DIGGING DEEPER AND DEEPER, Laura Gilpin diligently searches for her Biology specimen.
