Russian Added as Language Course Taking a seat next to German, Latin, French, Spanish, Greek, and Derivatives, Russian became the seventh member of the Language De- partment tongue team. The course is taught by a native Russian, Mr. Adal- bert Sorenson. Students in their third year of French, German, Latin, or Spanish are encouraged to try for the Indiana Uni- versity Honors Program. Through this program, pupils have the opportunity to study their language in France, Germany, Rome, and Mexico. Last summer, Shortridge sent two students to Germany, two to France, and one to Rome through this program. In French and German, it is pos- sible to carry out five years of study. Upon completion of the advanced courses, many of the students took advanced placement tests and re- ceived college credit for their study. In addition to regular courses, An- drew Ramsey taught a non-credit Portugese class once a week after school. STUDENTS CONCENTRATE on History in the THOMAS PAYNE OPENS the door to the post. Reference Room. Grapefr-uHs to Viet Nam Investigated Headed by Thomas Payne, the His- tory Department guides the student body to a better understanding of the world today. This understanding Is achieved through regular daily work, supplemented by special speakers for classes and auditorium presentations. Performing its part for the school, the department helps the Exercise in Knowledge team prepare for its matches and sponsors the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program. Seeking methods to improve its cur- riculum, the History department re- vised present courses to incorporate up-to-date materials and techniques including transforming grapefruits into globes, rewriting the Constitution, visiting the Harrison home, and tak- ing polls on topics from Viet Nam to elections. SPONSOR JAMES BURCH discusses the Lilly Scholarship with contestant Esther Eisman.
