These students demonstrated their ability to write in a contest sponsored by the depart- ment. Then they took tests for the na- tional competition. All pupils interested in writing found the opportunity to express themselves in their English classes. The sophomores wrote vocational themes while the juniors wrote term papers. However, the seniors man- aged to do the most writing. In their composition classes, they wrote journals, precis, and criticisms, turn- ing in two or three a week. They also did term papers emphasizing original thoughts and ideas. In literature classes, works ranging from those of Shakespeare to Shaw were read.
