Combining probing searches into the past with analytical studies of present-day problems and rela- tions, the department has sought to give students an i11- sight into just what history is and what makes it so important. An active group stemming from the history department, the History Club brings this search into a more informal atmosphere. Discussion, Debating Useful For Futureg Facts and tempers are likely to fly in any of the debates between enthusiastic Grant Shipley and james Rock. It is said that the future of a nation lies in the hands of its youth. Leaders are growing up at Shortridge and are being prepared to steer the country's course in days to come. Speaking before others, organizing thoughts, pre- senting ideas, understanding our government and its poli- tics-these are basic for citizenship. It is for these that Government and Economics and Public Speaking classes aim. Extra-curricular organizations provide practice-the Senate, and the Debate teams and club. To be leaders in our world, we must understand it and the part we are to play in it. Dramatics teacher, Phillip Hirsch, makes plays come to life for the aspiring stars in his class.
