Pig insides, molecular structures, bird calls, Isaac New- ton's apple, and Ben Franklin's kite are familiar topics to students and faculty around the science labs and rooms. Biologyis insects, eyes, and leaflets, Chemistryls broken test tubes, acids, and salt crystals, Physics' balances, buoyant forces, and thermal energies, and Naturalist Club hikes all play an important part in the lives of Shortridgers and leave a lasting mark in their memories. Students discover, ex- amine, conclude, and realize that they have so much more to learn. Michael Mark is will- ing to show you how it was derived. nderstanding And Knowledge Cf Theories From the simplest general mathematics to the most complex calculus, the math department teaches its stu- dents to think through the many situations that face them in the world of numbers. Offering five possible years of training, the department has stimulated many students with its complete coverage of the complexities of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. Interest in mathematics is voiced outside the classroom in three active organizations. Freshmen are invited to join Hi-Pi Club, from which they may progress to Math Club, and if their average and interest is high enough, Mu Alpha Theta, national math honorary. I Geometric hgures provide an appropriate background for the class discussions of the Math Department head, William Gibson.
