" All for Seymour stand up and holler! 99 By itself, 20-0 doesn ' t mean much of anything. But put it with Mr. Beck ' s freshmen Owls and it means a lot of things. Twenty wins — no losses. Power, Promise. Columbus Tourney Champs. Future Varsity Owls. In fact, the Varsity had just ended its own regular season with an identical 20-0, the longest perfect season record in Owl history. With such a sliining example set for them by Rick, Stan, Larry, Baron, Dan, Rich- ard, and others, the freshmen refused to be outdone. It was a first in freshman history, too, and for Coach Beck. Scott Silver snatched high scoring honors with his 311 points and had individual game high of 31. Conner, Werskey, Greaves, and Schepman followed in that order with 228, 209, 174, and 79 points. They played with a determination that lasted to the very end when it paid off. In the tourney, for example. A stubborn North team finally bowed 54-51 after a battle. Then in one of their better games they rolled easily over Central for the championship trophy. Their formula for success? Mr. Beck really doesn ' t know — except " that they always played together. They were what I ' d call a team. No one was ever the least bit selfish. " The White freshmen experienced a good season of their own, dropping only 3 of 14 games for a nice 11-3 record. Since for some games and for the tourney the two teams were combined, they did not play as many games. Max Borcherding and Jerry Hageman were consistent high scorers. There was championship in the seventh grade, too. They took their tournament by storm when they squelched Columbus in the final game. Winning their last 10 games in a row, they finished with a 14 3 record — of which both they and Coach Barnett can be proud. The eighth graders, on the other hand, played just as hard but couldn ' t win as many. Their 48-45 tournev loss to North was typical of too many of their games and caused them to settle for a 4-12 record. Big point- makers were Ed Jaynes with 192 points and 166 re- bounds and Bill Penner with 134 and 96. Coach Barnett ' s eighth grade Jets, however, made up for the losing record with their healthy 10-3 finish. John Franklin and Mike Nicholson led the way in scoring. 48 Here comes guard Jim Schepman, racing for a lay-up Behind him is fast-moving, sharp-shootin " Scott Next is our big center. Without the badly needed services of three men who were sidehned much of the season with injuries— Mike Sterhng, Eddie Jaynes, and Mark Suminski— the team suffered. Nor could the seventh grade show a winning season. It settled for two wins, three losses, and a tie. But, say Coaches Thomas and McClain, this team shows promise for next year. Ups and downs-mostly downs— that ' s the story of the fresh- man team which finished with two wins, five losses, and a tie. Not enough players, a lack of depth, and injuries to several key men hurt the team from the beginning. Despite these setbacks, however, defense did show improvement throughout the season. Since they had no scheduled freshman meets of their own, these grapplers wrestled on the Senior High ' s reserve team. All of them, says Coach Wintin, performed at least once in the various weight classes, and their com- petition with older sophomores and juniors gave them good experience for next year ' s reserve, and possibly varsity, team. Mr. Wintin hopes to include a freshman schedule in an expanded wrestling program for next season. Roger Stockelman, the only freshman to climb to the varsity wrestling team this year, will receive a varsity letter lor his performance in the 107-poun l class. Roger finished with a 4-7-0 record, all in varsity competition. 56 Crossing the country with deep-breathing milers At least one thing came from the cross rountrv team and that was im- provement over last year, savs Coach Mickey Beck. Winning two of its dual meets, the team placed third in both the Seymour and Columbus invila- tionab. Trackmen demonstrate speed and endurance Some outstanding individual efforts highlighted the eighth grade 1969 track season. Several teams were upset during the year in spite of inconsistent team performance. Sprinter, long-jumper, high-jumper Scotty Silver slashed the old 100-yard dash record of 11.2 seconds set by Baron Hill in 1967 to 10.7 seconds and chopped Baron ' s 7.0 60-yard dash to 6.8 seconds. He went on to reduce the old 220-yard record from 25.0 to 24.2 seconds in individual performances. With this page we breathe a sigh of relief, but we are proud to have been a part of its production. In spite of our troubles and low points, we have had fun, more or less, in putting the book together and in finally sending in the last few pages. But we owe much to many— to you, our fellow-students, our teachers, and our principals for being so co-operative. We owe gratitude to Mrs. Dannettelle, who for as many years produced the twenty-five Mirrors that have preceded this one, for her sugges- tions. We want to thank Photographer Jones for making individual pictures and some group shots and the Brothers McFall who added a number of casual shots. Mr. Rohrman contributed moral support and a lot of good advice. And we are especially indebted to Mr. Lambertus who guided us through all phases of our book and who himself did a large part of our photography and darkroom work. No more need be said except " thank you " . So to those who read this now and later we hope that the 1970 Mirror recreates the feelings for you as you truly experienced them during the past year. Pam, Mark, Paula, Scott, and the entire Mirror staff y
