ART MRS. DELONG MR. HILL TEACHERS The fascination of creating, the enjoyment of ex- pressing, the excitement of achieving, and the ap- preciation of the gifted are all part of the daily class work of the art student. He works with various materials to create lines, shapes, textures and colors and with these he is limited only by his imagination. Mr. Hill and Mrs. DeLong guide the students through a well-planned curriculum of basic color and design. Lettering, figure drawing, perspective, and print making are only a few of the many activities that go on in the art room. Many examples of the students ' work can be seen almost anytime in room 39 and oc- casionally in the main hallway showcase. Mr. Hill also teaches a class at Cortland and classes in mechanical drawing in the Junior High School. 84

SPECIAL EDUCATION MR. BLITON, TEACHER The Special Education class in the Shields Junior High School is taught by Mr. Bliton, The overall objective of a program in Special Education is to give children an oppor- tunity to develop to the fullest extent of their capacity and to aid in their ultimate de- velopment into self-supporting citizens. To accomplish this general aim, situations must be developed to provide the children with problems and a need to solve the prob- lems . Small classes and individualized instruction help the children to achieve the academic skills necessary for living in today ' s world. The children must be helped to establish good work, habits which will include training with experiences designed to promote emotional stability and self-confidence. The eligibility of children for the special education program is determined by tests and psychological examinations which are administered by trained and licensed per- sonnel. The children are separated into three groups according to chronological age. The children at Shields Junior High School are the oldest of the three groups. Two classes for younger children are located elsewhere in the city. 86
