CROSS COUNTRY MR. BECK, COACH Row 2 (left to right): Mr. Beck, Bill Acton, Richard Beatty, Joe Hackman, Mark Emkes Row 1 (left to right): Leon Taylor, Jim Noelker, Fred Hines, Charles Fox The Cross Country Team of Shields Junior High School completed one of the most successful, if not the most successful season, being undefeated both in dual and invitational meets. Seymour swept four dual meets and was especially strong in the three invitationals. The highlights of the year were the invitationals at Bloomington. Seymour placed three boys in the top ten to outdistance twenty- five other schools. Mark Emkes was second, Charles Fox was fifth, and Joe Hackman came in tenth. While at Seymour the C»wls swept all the first three places to run off with an eight team field. Mark Emkes set a new course record in a time of 8:08. 1. Mark was closely followed by Joe Hack- man and Charles Fox. Bill Acton along with Fred Hines supplied ample support by finishing seventh and twelfth respectively. At Columbus Seymour was piled against another undefeated team, DeSales of Louisville. The Owls were at their best, placing three men in the top five to earn themselves the top spot from eleven other schools. Mark Emkes set a new freshmen record in the time of 7:43 seconds. Mark finished second, fol- lowed by Hackman fourth, Charles Fox fifth, Bill Acton thirteenth, Fred Hines twenty-fifth, Leon Taylor forty-third, and Jim Noelker forty-seventh. The Owls not only proved themselves worthy opponents, but were well-Uked for their sports- manship and high attitude. Looking forward to next year, the boys will be moving to high school and are planning to make themselves known in the world of sports, and, of course, the coach will be looking for new boys to fill their shoes.
