Deadline plays major class activity role We've got to meet our deadlines, is a line often used in the confusion and pressure of the Journalism department. Deadline plays an important role in the life of a journalist, because if a deadline isn't met, the story won't be published, stated Paula Morgan, Journalism instructor. Journalism, generally considered an easy class, in truth takes hard work and determination. Journalism takes time and effort, but it's rewarding to see my story in print, stated Dana Dowell, Journalism I student. .,, A, ...,,. ,,,., mm if , , i V J . l .. ,.,,,,,, ., , - ,iii - 2 M ..,..,f. l J J t f',- .i1it'f1' 1 ,lt 5 AcademicsfJournaIism 1 I as , X R , W qv E I 'lliiii i ma.. 1. Industrial arts strengthens imagination The Sherman High School industrial Arts department has the reputation for turning out ex- cellent students who enjoy drawing intricate blue prints for houses, cabinets, or just about anything. Industrial Arts students rely on imagination for their drawings. HI enjoy drafting, it is helping me pursue my career as an architect, stated John Pritchett, junior. Woodworking students learn basic furniture construction, and General Metals introduces students to making sketches, learning proper use of hand tools, and reading drawings. Drafting has been thoroughly enjoyable. I have pro- gressively acquired drafting skills, commented Ricky Dunn, senior. Mechanical Drafting gives students an understanding of the basics of drafting. Students learn to visualize in three dimensions, to develop and strengthen their technical imagination, to think precisely, and to read and write the language of industry. They also gain experience in making working drawings. ii is hiss, Academicsflndustrial Arts 3

'es 1 I ide' Math application useful in fast-paced world Mathematics programs of the 1980's should in- volve students in problem solving. Problem solv- ing involves applying mathematics to the real world, serving the theory and practice of current and emerging sciences, and resolving issues that extend the frontiers of the mathematical sciences themselves. It was the math department's commitment to create an environment in the school such that each student may achieve mathematical literacy and may exercise, under proper guidance, the option to continue or to terminate the formal study of mathematics. From fundamentals of mathematics, algebra, consumer math, geometry, trigonometry, analytics, and calculus, the emphasis within the math program, stressed problem solving. Algebra ll is a challenging and fun course, commented Patti Roe, junior. Students should be able to search for and identify patterns, analyze given problems, verify findings, and compute, stated Robert M. DeBerry, math instructor. 2 4 r.
