English stresses basic reading skills The English department at SHS is designed to give students help in grammar, vocabulary and writing. The department added vocabulary and the keep- ing of a composition folder for each student to the curriculum this year. The results should indicate im- provement by the time this year's freshmen are seniors. Reading skills were also stressed in this year's program. The English department has special activities with guest speakers and special literature films. English is an exciting and challenging course, commented Kris Roe, freshman. English wouldn't be as much fun without the special activlties, commented Dawn Watkins, freshman. The program has gone very good this year. The new teachers have done an excellent job, stated English instructor Mrs. Karen Kays. 3 wwe 5 1. Randy Ewers, Felicia Brown and Larry Leeder create an English project with straws. 2. Shelia Champion, Andrea Watson, Teresa Koschelew, Debbie Gearinger, Mike Morris, and Marty Baxler listen to Mrs. Linda Linn lecture. 3. Shennell Cox, Brian McLain, Todd Kemp, and Chip Foscue are instructed by Ms. Chris Burroughs on how to prepare a Biography. 4. Jeff Fleck, and Dee Malone watch Ted Payne and Todd Riley act out a scene from Hamlet. 5. Students observe Brenda McClure and Charlie Blanton as they perform skits on the use of commas. 6. E271 Bi-lingual imagination, stresses communication Imagination! That's what foreign language teachers used to make their classes more interesting and alive. Sherman High offers Latin, Spanish, and French. Each language has a club to add to the learning pro- cess. l like Spanishg it's more interesting than I thought it would be, said Karen Fogle, sophomore. Regardless of what language an SHS student par- ticipated in, it.increased his or her knowledge of com- munication. l've enjoyed Latin because it has helped me to enlarge my vocabulary and l've learned where all of our words came from, commented Kim Buck- ingham, senior. Because SHS is affluent in all aspects of academics, it has developed bi-lingual endeavors. The Foreign Language department cared for the needs of college bound students and students who were tired of plain English. ln addition to the study of grammar, the students were encouraged to study the lifestyles of these respective languages.
