Witli only two veterans back, the 1935 B team made good in their nrst big game. Early in the first quarter Dodd carried the ball over the goal line for the first touchdown of the game. Throughout the remainder of the game Sherman's goal line was never threatened. due to the fine playing of the Bearcat forward wall. Dodd, Blankenship, Brooks, and Thompson shared honors for the touchdowns. SHERMAN 7-WOODROW WILSON 20 Playing in a comparatively empty stadium and on a hard bare gridiron, which is in contrast to their usual conditions. the Cats were badly beaten by the Wocmdrow Wilsori Wildcats during the first three quarters. Their blocking and tackling was ,very rugged which allowed the Wildcats to rip through their line for any number of gains. Becoming accustomed to the conditions, the Bearcats speeded up their passing offense to score in the final period. The touchdown was made by virtue of a pass from Dodd to Vestal. Dodd and Vestal played good games with Ellis playing his greatest of the year. SHERMAN 0-GREENVILLE 6 Greatly outweighed and handicapped by facing a much more experienced club, the Hghting Bearcats went to Greenville to do the impossible-defeat the famous Lions. Playing on a wet Held and under very trying conditions. neither team showed much of an offense. but made up for this by playing a stubborn defensive game. Greenville scored in the second period by a fluke end run. Many times after this the Lions threatened. but were held by th-e fine Bearcat defense. Although they did not fulhll their promise of winning, the Cats won a moral victory by playing one of the greatest games of the year. SHERMAN 0-ADAMSON 6 Playing on a wet Held. the Adamson Leopards and the Sherman Bearcats played on even terms until the fourth quarter when the Leopards scored. They failed to convert. Sherman threatened in the first quarter with a strong attack to their opponents' twofyard line, but they could not rush the hall over. Gther than this one threat Sherman's stubborn defense was the only factor that prevented a greater Adamson victory. Sherman's fourth quarter passing attack was futile, leaving the score 6 to O against them. Dodd and Vestal played good offensive games while Thompson. Dickson, and Ellis stood out in the line. SHERMAN 0-HI PARK 30 Due to had blocking and tackling the Bearcats lost to the HifPark Scotties in one of their worst defeats of the year. Besides poor playing. Sherman lacked the usual Gght which is their greatest asset. Taking advantage of our bad playing and their unusually good playing, the Scotties ran up a score of 30 to O. Sherman made 10 hrst downs, but were unable to put them together to make touchdowns. Ellis continued to play his great defensive game. FOOTBALL RESULTS SHERMAN 6-WICHITA FALLS 7 The Bearcats journeyed to Wichita Falls determined to defeat the team that eliminated them from the State race the previous year. Sherman got off to a very bad start by fumbling in the first period which resulted in a Wichita Falls touchdown. The try for extra point was good. Both teams threatened to score many times throughout the remainder of the game, with the Sherman Bearcats playing slightly better football. Despite these threats, the Bearcats failed to push over a touchdown until Vestal made a spectacular punt return of 50 yards to their oppo' nents' Sfyard line, where Barker plunged the ball over. Robinson's try for extra point was no good, making the final score 7 to 6 in favor of Wichita Falls. Sherman played an exceptionally good competitive game with Vestal, Dodd, Barker, and Ellis outstanding. SHERMAN 6-DENISON 7 Despite the fact that they were greatly handicapped by injuries, the Bearcats played their Hrst conference game with the best competitive spirit shown during the season. The Cats opened the scoring by running over a touchdown in the second period of the game. After Dodd made the touchdown, Robinson was sent into the game to convert, but was unsuccessful. The Bearcats held the Jackets scoreless until the last few minutes of the game, when, by virtue of a completed pass and a series of good gains through the line, the Jackets pushed over a tally. Denison's try for extra point was good, making the final score seven to six in their favor. Dodd's brilliant running and McGuire's staunch defensive play were the high points of the game. SHERMAN 19-BONHAM 6 Playing football below par, the Bearcats were held to three touchdowns against the purple Warriors. These scores came in the second and fourth quarters and were made by virtue of passes from Dodd to Stone and to Simmons and a plunge over center by Dodd again. Bonham's only tally was due to Beasley's intercepting a Sherman pass and running 40 yards to score. The game was rugged and comparatively slow due to numerous penalties and poor blocking and tackling. Ellis and Dodd stood out for the Cats. SHERMAN 7-PARIS 6 Paris started the game playing heads up football and scored on Sherman during the first period. After being outplayed, the Cats came back to make a touchdown by virtue of a well' executed lateral pass to Blankenship. Sherman made the extra point to go into the lead by the score of seven to six. After scoring once, both teams muffed many chances to increase their score, due to very rugged blocking and running. Sherman's had play was due to finding Paris a better team than they had excepted. In contrast to many games this year, Sherman won this one as a result of making the extra point. SHERMAN 13-GAINESVILLE 26 The favored Gainesville Leopards invaded Sherman determined to defeat the Bearcats to lift the district crown from their head. During the first half Gainesville's double wing offense was entirely too deceptive for the Cats, and as a result chalked up four tallies. Coming back strong in the second half, Sherman outplayed the Leopards by scoring two touchdowns to their one. Sherman's touchdowns were made by a successful lateral to Blankenship and a line buck by Barker. Although Sherman was beaten badly in the first period they proved they had more fight than any other club in the district by coming back and threatening to overcome an impossible lead. Braswell, Dodd, and Stone played very good football for the Bearcats. 3 BOYS' BASKETBALL Rayburn Nall, Kenneth Vick, Billy McGuire, Omnes XVe11s Clyde Stone, Richard Vestal, John Ellis, Billy Dodd, Ted Boaz RICHARD VESTAL TI-:D BOAZ JOHN ELLIS BILLY DODD l .
