I Class Hzstory Twelve years ago the class of 1951 walked through the doors of varzous schools to begxn the1r educatmon Only one of the graduatmg class Charlotte Shalberg began her fxrst year mn Sherzdan Lake Her teachers durmg the fzrst three years were Miss Eversoll Mass Ellxot and Mrs Lannmg Harold Sphtter entered Sherzdan Lake mn the fourth grade and Bxll DeShazer Jomed mn hls sxxth year Mrs Mocklernann was our teacher through the fourth fxfth and sxxth grades In the seventh and exghth grade graduatmg class conslsted of fxve students We began our Freshman year w1th s1x students They mcluded Dallas McM1chael from Brandon Glenn Alxshouse Douglas Laurnann Harold Sphtter Bzll DeShazer and Charlotte Shalberg The teachers were Mr and Mrs Allen Whxte At the begxnnmg of our Sophomore year, Douglas Lauxnann left us Melvm O Toole Jomed us from Syracuse Kansas After Chnstmas Glenn Ahshouse left us to Join the Sophomore class of Wall South Dakota Our teachers were Mr L Howard Morton and Mlss Estelle Faker Our J' umor year started with an enrollment of fxve Shortly after the first of the year Bob Swisher Jomed us from Weskan Kansas We elected class offxcers wxth Melvm O Toole as presldent We presented our class play, H1gh Hopes Our Jumor Semor banquet was held m the gym. lt 15 pleasant to remuusce to recall those happy days when we were together as a class group Dunng the past ten years I have at one tlme or an other contacted all of the members of our graduatlng class I thought you mxght be ln terested xn knowlng Just how thmgs turned out I hope that thxs letter may prompt 111. your mlnd some of that pleasurable remxnxscence whlch occas1onally serves to enrxch our later llves Only last week I happened to be ux Garden Clty Kansas v1s1t1ng a sxck frxend who IS xn the St Catherine Hosprtal there Pausxng for a moment at the znformatzon desk I was surprxsed to hear the name of a Dr Swxsher I was both pleased and surprlsfd to learn that he was none other than my old classmate Bob who had slnce gone to medxcal school and who now was rapldly becommg one of the outstandxng surgeons ln the country Charlotte Shalberg and I have corresponded with each other occaslonally durlng the past ten years Followmg along the hne of Bob Swlsher, Charlotte 15 now a member of the Unlted States Navy Nurse Corps At present she IS serving overseas where she has been for the last exghteen months In her last letter Charlotte mentxoned that she had seen Dallas McM1chae1 that xs Lzeutenant Cornxnander Dallas McM1chael of the Un1ted You w1ll remember that Mlke Joined the Navy as a seaman xmmedlately after gradu ation After spendmg several years at offxcer tra1n1ng schools dur1ng and after the Korean War Mxke was faced wxth the problem of whether to return to c1v1l1an hfe or to make a career w1th the Navy He chose the Navy Durxng the past few years Mlke has advanced rap1dly ln h1s work wlth the mtelllgence bureau and he told Charlotte that he IS expectmg to recexve a full commandershlp very soon Last summer my Wlfe the k1ds and I v1s1ted the old huntmg grounds agam We spent several happy weeks w1th B111 DeShazer hls wxfe and chxldren B111 marrxed a g1rl from Lamar and they certaxnly are happy together B111 told us that before they were rnarned he chased her all over Colorado and part of Kansas untll one day she Just stopped runn1ng and nabbed him The past ten years have been prosperous ones for B111 As for myself I ve been farmmg for the past ten years xn Colorado However I ve just been not1f1ed that I have mherlted a large cattle ranch m Argent1na from one of my r1ch uncles What one of my rxch uncles was domg down Cheerleaders Left to Right Jenn Alilhouee Oneta McClure Eltelh Splitter and Slurley Shalberg TEA .li 656 I 'V Av XC i- X ra, gl HA A u Y xl' fl, 'Cl-ji Boys Basketball Team The Sher1dan Lake W1ldC3tS although havmng a rather poor start on the basketball season came back v1ctor1ous wxth a w1n over the powerful Cheyenne Wells Tlgers The Wxldcats proved themselves to be a hard fxghtxng determxned team as they fought the1r way to a vlctory over the Haswell Llons The Weskan Coyotes defeated the Wxldcats by only two polnts at Weskan but the Wxldcats came back for vengeance when they played and defeated the Coyotes on the home court The Chlvxngton Indlans went home wxth thexr feathers down as the W1ldcats showered a volley of baskets to wxn by a large margm The players of the A strxng are Maurlce Txnsley Harold Sphtter Dallas McM1chael Bob Swisher and Den1s Weber Grrls' Basketball Team The g1rl s basketball team played only two games thxs year The f1rst team con sxsted of Jean Allshouse Shlrley Shalberg Estella Sphtter Jeanne Frey Della Lew1s and Charlotte Shalberg The games that were played were wxth Towner one game here and one game there Subshtutes for the team were Geraldxne Ahshouse Judy Lambert Mary W1lson Pep Club All the gn-ls from the seventh to the twelfth grades are members of the pep club The reason for thxs orgamzatlon IS to keep up the school sp1r1t There are thxrteen members and Mrs Charles Law 15 the sponsor The offmcers are Presldent Charlotte Shalberg, Vlce Preszdent Jean Ahshouse Secretary and Treasurer Loretta W1lson The cheerleaders are Shxrley Shalberg Estella Sphtter Jean Allshouse and Oneta McClure The cheerleaders purchased new suzts thxs year They are kelly green corduroy sk1rts and weskxts wxth gold satm long sleeved blouses The pep club has served at nearly all the home games and from the proceeds they recexved have purchased a new coffee urn for the use of the school actxv1t1es At varxous txmes home made candy pop corn balls and suckers were sold durlng the noon hour and free perlods Funds recelved from the varlous actlvxtxes have been used to purchase bats and balls educat1onal fxlms warm up suxts a basketball muslcal xnstruments and other athletxc equxpment Jug McClure, Connie Newby, Ellen Harris, and Loretta Wilson. Ja 'Q JZ' my A 'QQ Z9 Parent Teacher ASSOCIGUOD One of the outstandmg features of the educatxonal program durmg the school year 1950 51 was the estabhshment and orgamza tzon of the Sheridan Lake Parent Teacher Assoc1at1on An orgamzatlonal meetmg was held 1n September 1950 at whxch txme members were enrolled offxcers elected rules and regulatxons agreed upon and plans made for affzhatlng with the Natmonal Congress of Parents and Teachers All meetmgs of the group were held ln the school buxldxng Pro grams var1ed and cons1sted of muslcal events, dxscussrons and varrous types of educatxonal events Perhaps the outstandmg educat1onal program of the year was an open house whlch was held xn conjunctxon w1th the February meetxng A typxcal school day ln mxnxature was presented and all phases of school hfe was opened for the observatlon, crltzcxsm and suggestlons of the parents Tlus event also afforded an opportumty for parents to dlscuss wlth the teachers any personal d1ff1cult1es 1nvo1v1ng thexr chzl dren regardmng school l1fe Thus far the Shendan Lake Parent Teacher ASSOC13t10n has been an outstandmg success It IS hoped that thxs orgamzatlon w1l1 con txnue to thr1ve many more years and that It w1ll contmue to bestow many worth wlule benefxts upon the chxldren of the Sherldan Lake School I u I - D - . . - . . f I I D I I . . - I . .. ,, . . . . . . History ol Sherldan Lake Colorado In Kxowa County Colorado has long been known as the Land of Sunshme wxth xts mrld wmters and pleasant summers To the old settlers rn Krowa County nothxng IS more apparent than the change xn the atmospherlc humldlty ln the1r earlier ploneer days dews and frosts were seldom seen today It IS almost as common as ln the more humrd states Many years back about forty three years Sherxdan Lake was a brg resort town There was a bzg lake wxth a hotel and all the fac1l1t1es People came for mxles around to regaxn therr health At that txme land was bemg homesteaded The county seat was at Sherldan Lake Eads wanted th1s county seat real bad so they put rt to a vote a few txmes Sherrdan Lake won every trme One mght a few of the Eads offrcers came over on a flat car after the courthouse was burned down and took the vault and all the papers Sherrdan Lake dldn t want any blood shed so they just gave ln, and now Eads stxll has the county seat The frrst offzcers nn the courthouse were Ramond Mxller H A Long J H Booker Arther Standard Mr Brrch and Judge Allen At that trme the population was about four or fwe hundred A few years later the population was one hundred Cattle and wheat were the follow mg occupatxons occurred, H K.
