CLASS HISTORY From 1937 to 1949 ve, the '49ers, have studied, worked, and laughed our way through twelve years of Grade School and High School. Of the present class of sixty-nine, 29 students, Joe keen, Edgar Mitchell, Zelma Fee, Frances Nichols, Sarah Nil- kerson, Zetha Mae Arnold, Loretta Barnes, Joyce Poe, horeze Bretton, Cloma Cs-Jap, Billy Crutchfield, Patsy Ruth Collins, liaynond Fitzgerald, Boyd Lester, Louise Fletcher, Leon Llore- head, Wanda Lynn Mc01ung, nelen Lancaster, Vurniece Beck, Hem:-n Stuckey, Donald Key, David Jones, Frances Spray, Bob Rushing, Edwin Waddell, Marianna Walker, Mary Lou Wynne, Fred hingea, and George Mitchell, enrolled for that initial grade in 1937. The rip-roaring days of grammar school were contrasted ,' in 1943 at the graduation exercises when we took our past kid fights, whippings, and puppy-loves and put them aside as memories in order to accept new responsibilities as High School students. Glass Valedictorian was Frances Nichols and Slautatorian was George Mitchell. Our class was the first to graduate in McKenzie Hall. To be acknowledged in our High School Memoirs is the Jr. and Sr. Banquet in 1948 which was patterned aroundtan Ameri- can Indian theme. The U49ers9 can look back and remember with smiling faces the .Alumni Banquet, Decembe1'w, 1948. At this banquet we officially christened ourselves 'The '49ersN for the sob- ting was in a saloon typical of the boom towns which sprang up overnight in the 1849 Gold Rush. The Senior Play, 'The Campbells are Comingn, staged on April 8, 1949, is another high point in the history of the W49ers. It was a tremendous success, netting 5530. , Nothing can aid nothing will ever take the place of High School memories in the hearts of the W49ers. They, along with other remembrrnces, give to us that incentive from with- in to accept the challenge of our motto-Onward '49ers!
