Introduction 7 Earth.. . This, as citizens, we all inherit. This is ours to love and live upon and use wisely down all the generations of the future. Life and death on this planet now lie in Man's hands. Still beyond our grasp shimmer the ultimate truths. Unless we master these, how shall we learn—not to die—but to live? The Class of 1974 dedicates itself to the preservation of Earth and Sky and to the realization of these truths. ... there are few earthly things more beautiful than. . . a place where those who hate ignorance may strive to know, where those who perceive truth may strive to make others see. .. john masefield 10 Introduction Faculty Faculty 11 Energy Crisis Causes Administration to School Board Members Above: Back Row L. Faculty 35 The class of 1974 leaves behind many traditions and accomplishments at Sheridan High School. They leave behind the challenge of scholastic and athletic accomplishment equal to or better than any previous graduates. The class of 74 can be proud of their accomplishments. In addition to being the largest graduating class in the 81 year history of SHS they also can be proud of the fact that their class produced five National Merit Scholarship winners, numerous college and vocational school scholarship recipients, and many students who showed a genuine concern and respect for others. I am proud to have been associated with the graduating class of 1974 and wish you the very best in the future. Dr. Lee Christensen Principal, S .H .S . 36 Classes The graduates of the Class of 1974 file out of the gymnasium door to the strains of Wagner's Processional March . The High School years are finished and a new era has begun. Reflecting on the last four years we see some impressive accomplishments. Our class won first place in the Homecoming Float Contest when we were Freshmen; quite an unprecedented beginning. As the semesters passed, we grew with each new experience. We were only Sophomores when S.H.S. experienced its first—and hopefully last—bomb scare. As Juniors we broke all previous magazine sales records thus presenting Living in a Land of Make-Believe to the Seniors at prom. This last year our largest contribution to the school was the Steel Bronc by John Kuchera presented at Commencement. It will stand as a tribute to S .H .S . when the memory of our class as individuals is blurred by time. The Bronc symbolizes spirit—energetic and powerful. The same spirit with which I hope each of our class will make his orher destiny as joyful and productive as is befitting the class of 1974. Launches Gilbert Ralph has fallen in love with Josephine, the daughter of his commanding officer, Captain Corcoran. Likewise, Little Buttercup, a buxom peddler-woman, has fallen in love with the Captain himself. Class pride, however, stands in the way of the natural inclinations of both the Corcorans to reciprocate Ralph's and Buttercup's affections. The Captain has, in fact, been arranging a marriage between his daughter and Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Little Buttercup finally comes out with her secret, which solves the whole difficulty; she confesses that many years ago she had charge of nursing and bringing up Ralph and the Captain when they were babies. Inadvertantly, she got them mixed up; so the one who now was Ralph really should be the Captain, and the one now the Captain should be Ralph. The sudden reversal in the social status of Ralph and the Corcorans removes Sir Joseph as a suitor for Josephine's hand and permits her to marry Ralph, and her father to marry Buttercup. Sir Joseph resigns himself to marrying his cousin, Hebe. CAST Publicity Sir Joseph...............Steve Stresky Captain Corcoran .... Drama Department on March 22 and 23 in the High School auditorium. The story centers around Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and neice of the new king of Thebes. In the opening scene, the Greek chorus relates all the facts leading up to the present situation. Antigone's two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices have both died in their struggle over the throne of Thebes-made vacant by the death of their father. Creon, the successor to the throne, had declared that Eteocles be given a proper state funeral, while Polynices be left in the fields to rot. The penalty for attempting to bury him would be immediate death. But Antigone's love for her borther overcomes her fear of death, and she prepares for the burial. Here the play begins. Antigone's sister, Ismene, now knows of the plan. She trys to dissuade her sister, but Antigone turns aside all warnings and goes on with it. She is eventually brought to Creon's attention by Polynice's guard and she is condemned to death. Though he does not want her to die, Creon knows that she must in order to keep the people of Thebes under control. Haemon, Creon's son and Antigone's betrothed, kills himself in dispair—thus ending the Tragedy of Antigone. 132 Activities Chorus Nurse Antigone Ismene Haemon Creon Guard Page Eurdice Doris Moeller Sally Campbell Gail Symons Lisa Pince Kevin Ryan Bill Miller Bob Brown David Voogd Barb Klopotek Directed By: Olive Joyce Lee Set: Theater and Modern Drama Class Activities 133 A King, A PRINCE, And A Lord Are 134 Activities Added to 1973 Homecoming Royalty Opposite Page Top: Karla looks on while senior class president, Fairan Barnett, places the medallion on Homecoming King, Ralph Knode. Organizations 177 Services Held at Boy’s State Left To Right: Craig Yale, Tracy Ritchie, Craig Holstedt, John Rhodes, and Pete Kinney. Not Pictured, Ralph Knode. Boy's State, held annually at Douglas, was a memorable experience for all. Lasting for one week, all boys made speeches and ran for an office. Whether they won or lost, all six of our boys agreed that the week was an extremely worthwhile learning experience. Not only did they learn a lot about government and the democratic process, but also, they made many friends and acquaintances whom they will not soon forget. According to John Rhodes, one of the highlights of this year's Boy's State was a funeral held for an anonymous bird. Thus endeth another successful Boy's State. 178 Organizations Patriotism Shows in Girls’ Staters The exciting week of Girl's State was filled with long meetings, great fun, and very little sleep. Although the temperature was below freezing and all the heating systems were turned off, warm, close friendships developed during the short week. SHS Girls' Staters proved to be hilarious actors, as they put on a skit that brought the house down. They also represented Sheridan well and brought back many awards and fond memories.
