Special Services l For the first time, Shelbyville schools this year have had the services of a speech and hearing teacher in the person of Miss Ault. Long a familiar figure at the Booker T. NVashington School, Mr. Fort has recently taken over supervision of our testing program, grading and evaluating the results of achievement and aptitude tests. Modern school systems offer many special services undreamed of by the founders of our public schools. Under the complexities of modern living, more and more problems are being brought to the schools for solution. Checking attendance and solving the problems which hamper students in maintaining regular attendance is the work of Mrs. Chambers, attendance officer. The health problems of students can frequently be solved or at least helped by our school nurse, Mrs. Strait. TB patch tests, vision check-ups, X-rays, hearing tests -these are part of the .activities which keep her so busy. The paper vvorkn of a modern school system- finan- cial reports, tax records, transfers, maintenance expenses, and the interminable tasks of reporting, typing, filing, and record keeping-falls largely on the school board clerk, Mrs. Monfort, and her assistant, Mrs. Laird.

Schoul Board Upon the superintendent of schools and the school board rest the responsi- bility of steering the educational system safely in its course, avoiding the calm of excess conservatism and the Whirlpools of radicalism. Progressive education is most desirable, for education must surely lead somewhere. However, if the men at the Wheel do not keep their eyes and ears Wide open, the Winds of chance may lead the educational bark to destruction. SHS is fortunate in that able and experienced men of vision are piloting its course. Mr. Loper and our capable board of businessmen, Mr. Scofield, Mr. DePrez and Mr. Parker, are aware alike of the dangers of reverting to horse- and-buggy days and of the threats held by a Buck Roger world of illusion. Lessons of the past help them sail us confidently through the present with an eye on the future.

i he Office In our own building, Mr. Breck co-ordinates all activities both of our classrooms and our extra-curricular organizations. YVith such varied problems and personalities as appear in his office, he has a tremendous responsibility. Mr. Bass has the task of keeping the junior high school on an even keel, as Well as that of guiding high school freshmen through the shoals of adjust- ment to senior high in his orientation course. He also serves as dean of boys. Despite the mass of detail Work which falls on her shoulders, Mrs. Craige finds time to direct the activities of the senior high office girls, while Mr. Bass directs those assigned to junior high. Mrs. Craige has a Wealth of information at her fingertips, filed away in those capacious steel filing cabinets. As dean of girls, Mrs. Simpson lends a sympathetic ear to girl problems, which, strangely enough, quite often turn out to be boy problems! 25
