Then with a bash from a snare drum, the six Raiderettes marched to the center of the floor with the school ban- ner. Their new satin blouses gleamed. Their smiles dazzled. Their performances in the gym or on the foot- ball field were executed with perfection. And thanks to a dry spell and the new track, there. was no need to worry about marching through a swamp. The new track also brought another change. Because the administration feared that hoof prints would en- danger the track's life, the traditional Raider mascot iconsisting of a horse and riderl had to be sent out to pasture. Unfortunately the administration could not find a suitable replacement, but some industrious Raiders came up with a few unofficial "mascots." The first was an approximately two and a half foot tall stuffed gorilla with an "R" on his chest and a drill team hat on his head. The other "mascot" was created by some very athletic land very strongl Raider Yell Leaders. With three of them, they managed to form a "horse" and "Raider" to run around during the football games when a touchdown was made. 66 Raiderettes, Mascot .. .
