of an American lltiincl
A decision to journey over 6,000 miles away
from family, friends and all familiar surroun-
dings is not easy to make, especially for as
long as a year. This, however, was the choice
Sirpa Jokinnen made when she signed up for the
Youth For Understanding program back in Finland.
Although difficult at times, especially with the
language difference, Sirpa believes her choice
was, despite occasional spells of homesickness,
a sound one.
Each year, South hosts foreign exchange
students, and traditionally, the International
Club holds responsibility for making the student
"feel at home." Faculty members in the foreign
language department served as rotating sponsors.
Three student co-chairmen worked with them
in the planning of monthly meetings and various
functions to help acquaint Sirpa with some aspects
of American life that might not otherwise have
been presented to her.

Student Council was a do-nothing organization. But
they should have realized that it was the students
that made StuCo effective. Since StuCo was made up
of only 50 people, fresh ideas soon ran out. But
when a representative went to a class room asking for
suggestions, the responses were minimal or else he
was met with blank stares. But in spite of these
handicaps, there was an increase in student involve-
ment. The Homecoming Dance and blood drives had
good turnouts. The competition between the classes to
raise the most money for a charity was fierce. And
next year, thanks to StuCo's efforts, the parking lot
congestion should be eliminated, because both entrances
to the school will be utilized for incoming or out- .
