PEOPLE.. ..nUR1NG SCHOOL LIFE af? C. G. I.APPIN Oberlin College-B.A. Ohio State University-M.A. O. C. KNECHT Bowling Green State University-B.S. Indiana University-M.S. United States Government Superintendent BUILDING Building what? Our first impulse, when building is mentioned, is to think of more classrooms. Why? To care for our increasing enrollment? Yes. However, let's take a broader view. We are attempting to build quality as well as quantity. We aim to better the quality and training of our teaching force, our course of study and scholastic attainment of our students. Our aim is to build better individuals for the highly competitive game of life. Some ingredients for this kind of building are skill in preparing to earn a living and greater development of character. Another in- gredient is a strong conception of civic duty. We hope to place emphasis upon vocational, social and educa- tional guidance. We strive for finer relationship be- tween teachers and pupils-to inspire greater school loyalty'. Such a building program cannot be carried out by the administrators alone, by the teachers or pupils alone. We must all plan, work and strive together for a better and lasting Shawnee structure. And you, parents, help us mix a lasting type of mortar. The whistle is blowing, let us go to work. Administration Principal Although somewhat handicapped by growing pains, Shawnee continues to provide a wide and varied curriculum, and a large number of activities in which its students may participate. The basic col- lege preparatory, general culture, vocational agricul- ture, home economics and the commercial courses all provide opportunity for students to elect the type of training they seek, according to their individual in- terests and abilities. To help the students explore and seek out vocational possibilities, they are further aided by many guidance devices and services. Excellent li- brary facilities, teaching aids, various visual educa- tional techniques, health services and driver's training all contribute to the educational needs of our youth. An adequate, well-trained teaching staff is working constantly to provide the type of instruction needed for effective life adjustment education for our students. Truly, we continue to grow, not alone in numbers but in educational service as well. -12- NICHOLAS BACA Columbus, Ohio Ohio State University-B.S. Now the career pamphlets are here . . . No whispering in the Library, Mr. Crites! With the increased enrollment at Shawnee, the library staff is kept quite busy trying to satisfy varied reading interests. The facilities are so limited, however, that the seventh graders have to be excluded. This is the first time this has happened in the history of the school. Even with this limitation our library is one of the best in the vicinity. The library is under the able supervision of Mrs. Waltz with her corps of well trained librarians. The tribe lacked a lot of experience, but made it up in fight and the will to play. They had a very good season, considering the lack of experience of the braves. The record was five wins against only three defeats and one tie. The Card- inals were heavily favored over the Braves, but the game broke open with the Indians scoring twice in the first few minutes of playing time. This did not upset the Cardinals, for they came back and plunged over twice in the second half, to tie the game 14 all. Another highlight of the season was the game with the favored Forest Rangers, having only one defeat. This did not discourage the Braves. The game was very exciting and the Indians went ahead in the last few minutes of playing time to win by a score of 19 to 14. Upper left-Jackson tries to intercept a pass against Pandora. Basketball The record shows that the Indians were above the med- ium wlhile winning nine and losing six. Under the coaching of Paul Bricker, the new head coach, the Braves showed well in all of their contests, even with the Findlay Troians, who out-classed and even out-scored the Indians. 28.8 is one of the best scoring averages that has been made in this region for a long time. Leonard Volbert was the boy behind this record. Len, for short, was Shawnee's so-called One man team, but it takes more than one to equal tive. We congratulate the team, the coach, P. Bricker, and his assistants, K. Lusk and W. D. Shackelford, for the fine work they have shown throughout the season. DICK THOMAS, Sr., 6'1 , Forward, despite the fact that this was his first year on the varsity, Dick proved to be a good set shot and a valuable player. The indians did not show well in their first Class A tournament, as they were knocked out in the first game by Defiance, the eventual tourney winner. Highlighting the season were the games with St. Rose and Lima South. Both proved to be thrillers, with Shawnee winning over South and losing to St. Rose, later State champs. Neil and Jay Shaw were the two hardest-hitting Braves, as they both hit over the .400 mark. Growing out ot its second floor rooms, the elementary department is looking forward to the day they move to the new 15- classroom addition. This was the year, in the overcrowded state, ot two teachers to a room or 3 teachers tor two rooms, over 50 pupils in a room, small classes held in halls or any convenient spot, and other discomtorts. Elementary Principal Lite this year in Shawnee Elementary has been a chal- lenge to parents, pupils and teachers. How well it was met is shown by the stimulating way in which all concerned con- tributed to learning together, working together and living together. As we watched our new building become a reality, we thought of the strength and promise that have been given us from earlier days at Shawnee. We plan for and look forward to even better learning situations, continued cur- riculum development and finer human-relation techniques. RHEA W. EARL Ohio Northern University-B.S.
