PUGH KNECHT WALTZ BRINER COACH PUGH Mr. Pugh has proved to us his ability as a football coach by his agreeable disposition. everlasting patience and his zealous love for all sports. He has won the re- sponding confidence and affection of all the boys. He surely fulfilled all the requirements of a successful coach. ' COACH KN EC HT Mr. Knecht has developed many good basketeers during his three years of coaching at Shawnee. He has won the respect and loyal cooperation of all the boys with whom he has come in contact. CGACHES VVALTZ and BRINER Coaches, VValtz and Briner, have by their sincere effort, their personal experiences and art of coaching, led the girls basketball team through a very successful season. Shawnee has been very fortunate in having Mrs. Waltz for five years and Miss Briner acting as a very capable assistant for three years. We are still hoping to have them with us in the future. But considering the fact that eight lettermen in were lost by graduation, Jack lX'IcCoy injured the first part of the season and the team suffering boils throughout the season, we feel that we had a pretty good record. The Indians started the season with a scoreless tie with Columbus Grove for the third consecutive year. The next game was the first one at home and lost by one touchdown. One week later the boys made history for the school by playing the first game under floodlights at Celina. Celina was one of the class A schools to which Shawnee lost. Shawnee lost to Pandora by one touchdown but it is not considered the most sportsman-like manner in which they got it. lVe suffered our worst defeat in the hands of Bluffton by a score of 38-0 which we should not feel disgraced considering the fact that four of our regulars were on the injured list and this was the smallest score that they run up on any class B team this season. RIILLER Bob reminds one of a xy ar tank wading into the opposition. No one stopped him, but he stopped everyone. He was able to open up holes as a preliminary for gains. He will be captain next year. BAIR Johnnie has hut one objective fixed in his mind, to smash through the opponents line. On the defensive he was a bear. Very few plays went through him. SIMONS Bob was called upon to do most of the punting this year and he did a very splendid job at it. His position at guard will be hard to till next year. J... iEZ QYQQENA Boys' Basketball HE SHAVVNEE Basketball team of 30-31 was not as successful as it has been in the former years. Although we only won two games during the season, and had the toughest schedule so far, the boys had plenty of snap and never got discouraged. With only one letterman, around whom to build a team, and one week to prepare. they lost the first game to Cridersville by a score of 32-ll. The next week the team traveled .to Wapak and lost by a close score of 17 to 20. The following night they played Lima South which was a little out of their class and got beat 32-l0. Spencerville handed our boys a trouncing of 25 to 4. The boys lost the following Friday and Saturday to Elida and the Alumni by a score of 24 to l-l and l3 to 48 respectively. The boys lost a close game and a real thriller to Columbus Grove by a score of 2l to 23. Rockford beat the boys on Rockford's floor to a score of 16-29. Shawnee was about to enjoy a victory over Beaverdam when in the final seconds of the game they lost out. The score was 26-28. Here the boys gained courage and the following Friday defeated VVaynesfield by a narrow margin of 26-24. Spencerville again defeated our lads 17-32 on their own floor. f i two hard fought games 22-31 and 21-23. f The next two weeks the Indians traveled to Gomer and Elida when they lost For the second time in the season the boys were out-classed by the strong Bluffton 'XX five and suffered the worst defeat, 16-67. fx The boys lost to .Harrod by a score of 21-43. ,' 3 DN They again suffered three bad defeats in the hands of Harrod, Pandora and ' - 2. The opening game against our old rival, Cridersville, xi as plenty fast, the game ending in a tie score 15-15. The following week they played YVapakoneta, one of the strongest teams on .the schedule, and though they played almost if not the best game of the season, they were defeated 15-l-1. During the same week, the girls heat jackson Center in an easy game .21-15. ln the next three weeks they acquired a winning streak which carried them to vittory over Spencerville, lilida, and the Alumni, with scores of 27-lb, 20-15, 2-1-16, respectively. However, they were downed by Columbus Grove, one of Putnam County's strongest teams, possibly as a result of over confidence acquired from the preceding three victories. lt was a close game ending 19-16. Next, they went to BCi:ff'CI'd2ll1l and won an easy game 2-1-15. Another easy victory occured the next week when VVaynesfield came to Shawnee. The score was IS 7 During the next three weeks, the girls traveled to foreign floors, and defeated three of their closest and strongest rivals, Spencerville, Gomer and lflida. by scores of 18-16, 20-22 and 20-11. Being encouraged by these, the girls met the visiting team of Bluffton, the County champions for years, and tied them, playing the best game of the season. 'lihen Harrod came over and was defeated by a score of 19-16. f I Again the girls played Cridersville, this time on Cridersville's Hoor. Playing out f of form, they were beaten badly 17-9. 'J' 'lihe next week, the Shawnee team went to Pandora, where they lost a sacrifice fame. The business or financial part of the stall was handled by Imogene Giflin. The money received from the Concert and the Gperetta, Elf' - along with a generous donation from the school board was used to buy Glee Club i A X outfits for both the boys and the girls Glee Club. A. is an organization, Nation wide in its scope. lts purpose is to advance Agricultural Education to a higher level. Among the activities of the Shawnee Chapter during the past year has been a Weiner roast, a father and son banquet, basketball and chapel. lt is hoped that by next year we can arrange a school exhibit, sponsor improved Agricultural practices, and aid in securing material for visual instruction in class. The past year has proven Vocational Agriculture to be more popular at Shawnee than ever before and Shawnee Chapter F. F. A. hopes to help maintain this popularity. The crook known as the Vulture is the first to score in the contest: his arch enemy is mysteriously murdered. The crime is committed in an isolated farm house and naturally sus- picion falls upon everyone in the house. Although the unraveling of the mystery is in the ihiainds of a police detective, he receives many suggestions from a luck correspondence-school detective, who specializes in ringer prints. This luck , Toby, digs up the clue that finally leads to the capture of the murderer.
