YOUNG EDITOR-IN-CHIEF FOREWORD YOU AND YOUR FUTURE Shaping And Shocking Future Behavior There appears in the behavior of man today an increasing future-consciousness in terms of survival and eschato- logical speculation. In responding to hurtling accelerated, uncontrollable, unpredictable and uncertain change, man's ability to cope with present and future demands is threat- ening to undo us. We ask, What will my future be like? What will be the shape of the future? The search for an- swers to these questions is mind-bogging, complex and heuristic. Kierkegaard concluded that: Life must be understood backward, but must be lived forward . For certain, the fu- ture belongs to the efficient and to those prepared. If you do not prepare and plan for the future, then you prepare and plan to fail. The future is now, today! We suffer fu- ture shock now. Alvin Toffler, in his book Future Shock, defines future shock as: The distress, both physical and psychological, that arises from an overload of the human organism's physical adaptive systems and its decision-male ing processes . In other words, future shock is the human response to overstimulation, which can cause a crash in future landing. The amount of stress and strain now im- posed on the individual may well overstretch and over- load his capacity to adopt, adjust, and cope with the now and the later. Modern man today is caught between a dilemma of living in the best of times and simultaneously the worst of times. On the one hand, for example, we are living in a scientific technological age of space shuttles, moon land- ing, nuclear energy, subscription interactive cable-qube T.V. providing audience participation in dialogue, banking, polling, politics, education, security, etc., by pushing but- tons on the set at home. On the other hand, at the same time, we are living in the throes of inflation, unemploy- ment and high taxation, a resurgencefresurrection of the KKK and Nazi groups, a returning to neighborhood schools, outlawing busing for integration: a slip-sliding backward to a conservative mood in politics, religion, race relations: a rise of the moral majority , the electronic fundamentalist churches and the new right: a revival of crime and violence as expressed in killings of black inno- cent children tAtlantaj, of black males tliuffaloj, of presi- dents and leaders, and a spreadingfcontagion of unethical corruption as demonstrated in dishonesty, mistrust, greed, bribes, cover-ups, abscams, riots and others. The trend re- sembles a slip-sliding backward . Yet, in spite of the seemingly imposing gloom and doom, there remains an optimistic hope and a bright side some- where. lt's up to us to find it and fan its flame. Remem- ber, the future is in God's hand and our hand. God gave us two ends: one to sit on and one to think with. lt's up to you which one you use. Heads you win, tails you lose! The lyrics of the song, Swinging on a Star are relevant: Would you like to swing on a star Carry moon-beams home in a jar, and be better off than you are . . . Finally, I do not know what the shape of the future will be, or what the future holds for me. But I do know who controls and holds the future-God, who will shape and control your behavior if you let him. Shakespeare writes: There is a Divinity that shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will . I believe this truism. And because He tGodj lives, I can face tomorrow without fear, and remain ALIVE, FULLY FUNCTIONING, AND COMING TO TERMS WITH MY ENVIRONMENT, today, tomorrow and forever. lt's up to you to do likewise! Smith, President The Shaw University To The Class of 1981: A yearbook should be a reflection andfor a microcosm of the activities of a college or a university. This year's produc- tion of the Shaw University Bear Yearbook exemplifies just that. It mirrors the basic philosophy of Shaw University with its emphasis on the learning process. It is congruent with Shaw's basic educational philosophy that education should be a living process and should be useful. It demonstrates, moreover, that education should establish functional linkages between theory and practice with the underlying assumption that the importance of knowledge lies in its use. More specifically, it is additionally reflective of the basic assumption of Shaw University that it is possible to be liberally educated for the world of work as its curriculum provides meaningful answers to the philosophical questions posed by the educational philosophies of W.E. Dubois and Booker T. Washington. Shaw University holds to a holistic view of education by drawing no significant distinction operationally between aca- demic and non-academic activities. All of the activities represented in this yearbook are, therefore, geared towards their learning implications for students and contribute greatly to making the whole college environment conducive to learning. Congratulations are, therefore, in order for making the publication, in terms of content and coverage, representative of the mission and purposes of Shaw University. Sincerely yours, Stanley H. Sherrill, Chairman Trustee Board of Shaw University FAREWELL TO THE GRADUATES-1981 After four years of sojoum within the walls of this historic in- stitution, you depart to enter into a rather turbulent world. We trust that these four years have been a period of mental, social, moral, and religious discipline that has prepared you for the larger school of life. Here you have been sheltered, there you will be exposed, here you have been guided by teachers and counselors, there you must look for guidance from within your- selves. Your training at Shaw University was designed to fit you for service to others and not to yourselves, but If you give to the world the best you have, the best will come back to you. We admonish you to give your best in whatever area you have the opportunity to serve, however humble your task may be, for it is the quality of the man that dignifies the job and not the job the man. You go forth with the blessings of your Trustee Board of Shaw University upon you, and may you prove yourselves wor- thy of being numbered among her illustrious sons and daugh- ters. Farewell! These purposes vary from one extreme to the other, but only those who are sincere about getting an education achieve these ends. Seniors, as you embark upon that journey into either the world of work or on to higher levels of education, I would like for you to reflect upon what life has been like for you at Shaw. It is my belief that life out- side the campus can be just as enjoyable. For those underclassmen with years to go, l would like for you to be just as concerned now about your future after graduation. If you get an early start in planning that big step, it will be just that much easier for you In closing, I would like to extend the heartiest congratulations to those who have faced the task of achieving a degree, and hope that you will al- ways have faith in your abilities. If there comes a time when you feel that your life is too hard, just go and have a talk with God. Good luck and much success! We learned that in order to generate change, it is imperative that we work and plan...TOGETHER. It is my belief that this year was one which will enable Shaw University to pre- vail among other colleges and universities in this country. The growth and deve- lopment of Shaw has begun, and will definitely continue! We, the students, realize that the real Shaw University is not the buildings, but the people who ge into those buildings. Therefore, when we take pride in our- selves, we also take pride in Shaw. I extend congratulations to my fellow classmates of the Class of '8l', and I wish the in-coming Student Government Association officers and the Shaw University student body the utmost in productivity and the best in all their future endeavors Sincerely yours, uwzB,ww-AS Maurice Brown SGA President, 1980-81 HStriving Together To Make Things Bettern 5 5 Eve? God Bless You Always, 2 1 A THE EDITOR SPEAKS We become knowledgeable through tthej channels of academia, yet there is another source toenlighten ment: that of participation in activities! With successful achievement, the feelings of accomplishment, dedica tion, and pride broaden the educational growth of an individual. There were times when we believed this Edition would not be published. Through hard work, and a smal yet determined staff, we made it a reality. It was felt that whatever space was available for introductions should be used for a more valuable purpose and that at least an attempt should be made toward bringing back the unity at Shaw through our action' and impressions. In preparing this edition, I wish to again thank all those mentioned in the acknowledgements, particularly Reverend Ronald Swain, Mr. l.D. Hinton, and Mr. Willie 1. Hardee llp to express my gratitude to Mr. Macl Sowell who has always been there when we needed him: and to add special thanks to Mr. R. Andrevw McManus who has helped me in almost every part of this production. I am particularly anxious to acknowledge the invaluable and essential role of Mr. Paul Vandergrift, Ir., wht unselfishly bore the major responsibility for this book. His capacity to concentrate on this project, despite the cares and problems of a busy Development office is indicative of the great asset he is to Shaw Univer sity. Special appreciation goes to my parents who have asked so little and done so much. I would like to express my sincere thanks to those who made it possible for me to serve in the capacity o Editor for this edition. I hope that each person is in some small way pleased, and in the course of looking through this book, I hope that a smile is foncej brought to each face-then my work will not have been in vain! To my fellow graduates, THE CLASS OF 1981, I would like to say that we are in a Class all our own. hope it leads the way to many future successes.
