Although the schedule was about as hard as could be, the team upheld the reputation it gained last year. when hockey was in its infancy at Shattuck. Games were played with Carleton l reshmen, lilake School, St. Paul Academy, and St. Thomas Academy. Two practice contests were also held with the Carleton College first team. Yvith five letter men back, prospects for the coming season looked very bright at the beginning of the year. Run-dell, Boardman, Gamble, Orme, and Leach were the veterans of last year's team. Howard and Foshay, members of the 1925 squad, soon developed into good defence men, and either one, paire-d with the veteran Boardman. produced a nearly impenetrable wall in front of the goal. On the forward line were Captain Rundell, Gamble, and Orme, with Mueller I, Head, and Poehler as sub- stitutes. The goal guard position was filled by Leach. In the first two games of the season, practice ones with Carleton College, the team held thc more experienced college men to 1-O, and X1--0 scores. Later the Shads took revenge for their two previous defeats by trouncing the Carleton Freshmen, 10-1. Blake was the next opponent, and this team was defeated 2-1 in a close game played under very adverse con-ditions. St. Paul Academy was beaten by the Cardinals -L-2 in an overtime game, Orme scoring two goals in the extra periods. A return game with the same team resulted in a l-1 tie, no overtime sessions being played. As the end of the season drew near, it was seen that by breaking even in the remaining two games with St. Thomas Academy, the Shattuck aggregation would be in the lead for Northwestern honors, the Tommies having pre- viously lost to St. Paul Academy. Only wonder- ful defensive work saved the first game for the Cardinals, the score being 1-I after four overtime periods had been played. In the last contest of the season the Shads were defeated 3-2 by St. Thomas in an overtime game. In the second period of this battle the Tommies made two rather lucky goals, an-rl scemcd to have the contest tucked away. But the fighting Shattuck six did not think so, and play- ed all the harder. Twice Mueller I, playing his last and best game of hockey, flashed down the right boards and each time came back with a goal to his credit, which tied the score. Fate was against the Shads, however, and in the last over- time period, with three minutes to go, a St. Thomas man trickled through and sent in the winning goal. Captain Rundcll was by far the most spectacu- lar player on the team. His fast skating combined with his tricky stickhandling and harfd back-cheek- ing made him outshinc all others. Boardman, star CAPTAIN RUNDELL -sf nos ie- SHAD
