The school year oi 1951-52 has come to an end and the class of '52 has com-
pleted a pleasant tour years here at Shasta Union High School. When this class
ot 1952 entered High School conditions seemed to be settled to the extent that
one could look forward to security in the years ahead but the last four years
have brought tremendous changes in the world, including the Korean situation
in which many former students and graduates of Shasta Union High School
have already taken an active part.
The years ahead seem uncertain but with a sound educational background,
together with the moral and spiritual values which have become a part of you
through your educational experiences in your home, your school and your
church, you will be able to meet the future a day at a time and solve the prob-
lems as they arise. As you go into another school experience, the work world,
or into a military service, you will have many problems to solve but by being
deliberate and keeping a level head you will be able to solve your problems.
The world situation is very tense and within the next few years it is very
important that We all work for the American way ot life in order that not only
we, but the future generations, may live in a free World.

Young people are seldom conscious of the great changes that are taking
place in the world about them. This is quite natural, for they have known no
other age. Nevertheless, it is plain to members of a high school graduating
class today that the "times" are unsettled and very uncertain. Old philosophies
have been questioned: age-old institutions have been flaunted. It is impossible
to plan into the future with any degree of certainty.
There results a condition of great confusion, and but little feeling of per-
The mind of man has conquered the land, the sea, and the air. Science has
split the atom and built the atomic bomb. We have come almost to believe that
there is nothing our scientists cannot do for us. Yet, with all their masterful
achievements, we do not have a sense of well-being and security.
There are perhaps many causes contributing to this condition today. But,
most of all, perhaps, is the fact that We are believing in science--in man, in-
stead of in God.
The mind of man cannot long deny the source of its divinity, nor can it con-
tinue to labor productively in a spiritual vacuum. Science without a soul is
much like knowledge without Wisdom. "Man cannot live by bread alone."
Great men like Lincoln learned early in life that there is a knowledge deeper
than logic, richer than science. lt is the Wisdom of an Almighty.
As you leave the cloistered halls of your school, and the sheltered environ-
ment of your homes, to find your place in the sun, it will be well for you to put
your confidence in a Supreme Being and place the highest values in the things
of the Spirit.

As I sit here among the scramble of books, papers, and people, I think how
wonderful it has been to be editor of the Shasta Daisy. As I look back, I find that
we worked hard, fought quite often, but had lots of fun bringing this book to
you. If you enjoy the Daisy half as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you,
we shall be happy.
Good reading and pleasant memories, from the Staff of the 1952 Shasta Daisy.
