We jo in and for a part of each day this school is our life. Growing Expanding We see and know ourselves in the mirror which is school. And so we grow into what we must become. Some of us with confidence in the way things are, will go into business, will go into war. Others of us still search for life's secrets . . . Still search for happiness, respect, identity. The annual Hi-Y homecoming dance, held on a clear Saturday night in October, celebrated the joyous football victory the night before A large, smiling pumpkin welcomed the couples at the door of the school, as inside. Menagerie provided the entertainment for the evening Such novelties as a giant spider's web and an eerie bat cave beguiled those attending The excellent punch and cookies contributed to making the dance one to remember Left Patty Wareham and Dave Brubach help themselves to appetizing refreshments. Farrell, a bonfire is prepared to stir up spirit The bonfire committee planned to make this year's rally the biggest and best With a lot of cooperation they succeeded in building a mammoth woodpile, but it was destroyed before the rally had begun Faithful and determined, the committee erected another woodpile which served the purpose With the fire glowing, the football players, cheerleaders, admini stration. coaches, and student body roused every bit of school spirit from within themselves Together they vowed to Walk all over Farrell Top Lett Dave Mackm gases up the bonfire as excited students look on Top Right A romantic moment Right Bonfire Committee hopes to revive team spirit and hang Farrell at bonfire 20 BONFIRE Annual Farrell Rally Inspires Players To Victory TOUCH TICERF GDINfr The Farrell Rally set the stage for Shar on's biggest victory of the season Announcing the game” was senior Nick Fabish. who also interviewed Coaches McCluskey and Chrobak In the first half the Farrell Steelers gained the lead, due to the bribing of the officials by the Mafia However, the Tigers rallied in the second half The Red Baron entered, greased the players, and saved the game The highlight of the rally was the appearance of the Farrell High Cheerleaders dancing to the tune of Sweet Georgia Brown Left Furl Cheerleaders. Vic Heutsche. and Rick Fleischer, exhibit nice legs and fine style Lower Rtght Farrell Rally Committee relax after encouraging team and fans m fun-filled performance Lower Left Jack Bamck. portraying the Red Baron, saves the day at the Farrell Rally FARREU RALLY 21 Traditional Christmas Dance Revived Student request prompted Student Council and Key Club to revive an almost forgotten Sharon Tradition—the Christmas Dance The affair was held at the Shenango Inn on the evening of December 22 and due to great interest, the 100 couples attending made the dance a sellout Music for the occasion was provided by the popular Brainchild', who played everything from rock to boogie and even an old-fashioned hoe-down square dance tune The highlight of the evening was a visit by Santa Claus Forsythe who handed out candy canes to all the good little boys and girls. Mr James Brennen Dr Eugene Artac Administration Father To School Functions Mr William Crowell The Sharon High School Administration, composed of Principal William E Crowell and Assistant Principals Robert K Paxton and Donald A Bennett work conscientiously for both students and teachers in all phases of school life Each administrator performs a different, yet equally important, task Their motive is to provide students with the proper atmosphere for the finest education possible Mr Donnald Bennett Mr Robert Paxton ADMINISTRATION 29 Guidance Department Expands, Includes Vocational Counselor The Guidance Department, under the direction of Mr Forrest Eakin. has added two new counselors to the staff The first. Mrs. Dolores McCrumb. advises girls in grades 9 through 11 Mr Ralph Packard is the depart ment's first vocational counselor He deals with those students planning on pursuing a trade upon graduation or perhaps attending a technical school The secretaries have also had an addition to their staff Mrs Mary Hodge now assists Mrs King and Mrs Toskin in typing, preparing college transcripts, and answering phones Mrs Mary Hodge 30 SECRETARIES Mr James Bailey Mrs Dolores McCrumb Students Show Intense Interest In Choosing Courses The new English program after its first year has been judged highly successful The change away from the traditional high school English curriculum enables juniors and seniors to choose a different course offering each six weeks The courses in this year's program range from Chaucer to American Drama to Semantics and includes offerings in almost every subject imaginable However, each stu dent must meet certain basic requirements These include two writings, one Shakespeare, one World, two British and two American courses Miss Leah Edell Mr Oavid Cornell Miss Dorathymane Donlm 32 ENGLISH Mf William Thompson ENGUSH 33 English Curriculum Expands And Improves In Its Second Year Mrs Betty Yohman 34 ENGLISH Freshmen and sophomores follow their own English program Although they don't choose a different course each six weeks, some changes have been instituted which make a more inter estmg program possible for the students Since the freshman year is the transitional period from grammar to literature, the purpose of the program is to introduce the student to literature in all its forms and teach the student to interpret basic themes To fulfill this pur pose, it is necessary that a freshman apply his formerly acquired skills In accord with this idea, freshmen teachers utilize Great Expecta tions. The Odyssey. Romeo and Juliet, and a series of sea stories The sophomore English program continues to build a student's skills This program, too. has changed with the addition of new features including poetry, modern novels, and some in dependent study The basic idea behind sopho more English is to build a solid background but at the same time develop better communication accented with a touch of enjoyment A Tale Of Two Cities is utilized by sophomore teachers for this purpose Mr Robert Rosati Mrs Lois Sirock Mr William Facko Mrs Mary Ellen Meier I ENGLISH Modern Equipment Improves Utility Of Instructional Materials The Instructional Materials Department, directed this year by Mr Larry Kukura. has expanded considerably during the past two years It provides almost unlimited equipment, sup plies, and service to the faculty and students interested in enriching their classroom expert ence Membership in the Midwestern Area Intermediate Unit IV makes available over 3000 free films in all subject areas, audio tape and cassette materials, and a general repair ser vice Many teachers avail themselves of these services Below Anna Campagna threads the projector in the visual aids room Right Jeff Gross carefully examines a film strip in visual aids Library Facilities Assist Students In Academic Pursuits The library has added a new librarian. Mr James Squatnto. to its staff He is well-qualified for the post, having received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, with a major in Library Science, from Edmboro State College He and Mrs Sarver competently undertake the sundry duties library work demands This year the library contains approximately 12.000 volumes. 105 periodicals with a five year backlog, and a seating capacity of 130 In addition to the listening room and the faculty library, an added feature is the library science classroom It provides a convenient place for teaching library science skills Below Dale Lafferty relaxes while reading in the library Mr James Squatnto AUDIOVISUAL 37 Mr William Ciccone Mr Nicholas Marneion Mr Alex Chrotoak 38 HISTORY Social Studies Involves Students In Historical Pursuits The social studies department attempts to help students revive the past and better under stand the workings of our government Through such courses as Civics. American History. World Cultures classes research various customs and traditions of other countries In American History, various projects are initiated during the year to intensify interest in the subject. Other elective subjects such as Law and Sociology provide additional opportunities for students to continue their studies NfSTl Sundry Outlets For Self-Expression In Music Department The student who desires to express his soul and mind through music can participate in any of the three programs offered by the Music Department—Band. Choir and Orchestra Each organization is designed to acquaint the interested student with theory, music literature and composition By presenting concerts, recitals and half-time shows throughout the year, the Music Department regularly reveals its dedication and finesse Below Fluttering flutes and crystal clear clarinets add fullness to the marching band Opposite Page. Director of Music 42 MUSIC Art Department Cultivates Creativity In Its Students To discover and develop hidden talents, to improve artistic skills, to produce outstanding artists these are the goals of the Art Depart ment Mrs Mangus and Mr Marks teach the student the fundamentals of drawing, design and painting The student then applies these prin ciples to create interesting and unique works of art An unusual project of the Art IV students this year was cleaning out and carving pumpkins for Halloween Lower Right Brenna Cornwell president of Art Club, presides at an after school meeting Mrs Nizza Mangus 44 ART Business Education Trains Students Well For Business Fields The business department strives to develop the skills of students who are preparing to enter the fields of business The curriculum is broad, the courses are many, the teachers are versatile in the field Unlimited opportunities are provided for the student to meet the challenge of any business vocation Below Sally Bondarenko and Judy Gadola practice skills in typing class Mrs Mane Murrell Business 45 Extensive Courses, Modern Equipment Benefit Bus. Students To best train its students for the commercial world, the Business Department offers instructional courses supplemented with up-to-date office machinery and equipment. Chemistry Biology. Earth Space Science—provide those interested in them fascinating new modes of perceiving life With their emphasis on laboratory work, the sciences acquaint students with the ways to observe, deduct and reason logically This year Mr Julius Demi was added to the staff, replacing for one year Mr Larry Kukura. who is working in the Audio-Visual Department Mr Michael Smith Mr John Hull SCIENCE 51 52 SCIENCE Science Presents Man With Clearer Picture Of His Environment The Science Department, with the assistance of modern technical equipment, provides an adequate background for all students interested m this area It affords a better picture of man's environment and the problems he inherits For the science major, it offers all the courses necessary to meet college requirements The department aids all students in better understanding the world in which they live Below Novice archeologist Tom Robich skillfully ex amines a rock speciman Opposite Page. Algebra I. Business Math and Geometry, there is an ex tensive choice of study for every type of student Yet another concentration has been added to the department Math Seminar now rounds out and complements the remaining areas of Algebra II. Trigonometry-Algebra, and Calculus Mr Richard Fischer Mr Harold Hogue MATH 55 Math Seminar Provides Alternative Course Of Study Math Seminar, a new course offered this year, is designed to provide additional study beyond the basic mathematical courses offered Its prerequisites are Algebra I. Algebra II. and Geometry Although it is limited to pre-Calculus work, it offers experience in a variety of areas such as polar graphing, permu tations and combinations, probability, and an introduction to statistics This course is de signed for those interested in numbers, or simply for those needing a required Math course for college Mr Jack Hudson Mr Arthur Houck Serviceable Skills Acquired In Practical Arts Department One of the courses that enable an individual to cope with problems encountered daily is Driver Education The purpose of this course is to promote safe and flowing traffic conditions It also prepares a student for his driving test at Mercer Driver Education teaches students to become competent in their handling of a motor vehicle This course is worthwhile and every student completing successfully will aid in making highways safer Below Three hungry girls--Judy Volansky. They receive a solid background in the uses of various utensils in the future Students acquire experience in tailoring and sewing They learn how to read and follow patterns, and use the sewing machine Home Economics introduces child care—handling children and keeping them happy The entire department is devoted to the development of the whole person Miss Frances Duntsa PRACTICAL ARTS 59 Miss Beverly Kloss Application Of Knowledge Necessary In Practical Arts Originality which may otherwise be over looked is being fostered in the Practical Arts program Students are able to acquire, through study and constant practice, valuable skills in Metal Shop. Electronics. Dan Killa The 1971-72 Concert Choir is under the direction of choir master Mr William Blough Composed of 100 members, the choir works extremely hard for the presentation of its two concerts at Christmas and in the spring The music for these programs ranges from classical and religious to folk and modern The traditional Twas the Night Before Christmas , presented at the Christmas concert, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic , sung at each spring concert round out the choral presentations Innovations within choir include the use of more eight part music, trips to sing at various schools and community functions, and the forming of a 13 voice Madrigal group as a representation of the choir Right Accompanists Carol Butchko.
