-nw- uQ i 0 I Mr. John McPherson Z 2 Under the direction of Mr. John McPherson, the band is one of the school's most active organizations. lts activities begin during the summer as the members present a weekly band concert. As the school year ap- proaches, their activities really increase. Last fall they marched at Lanark's Old Settler Days and at Forreston Sauerkraut Day and at the Freeport Centennial Cele- bration. They also played a concert at Savanna's 4-H Roundup during the late summer. Homecoming is usually a gala event and this year it was doubly exciting for the band as they played at the Northern Illinois University Homecoming at DeKalb and at our own Shannon Homecoming on Labor Day. After school began, the band played a concert at the PTA Halloween program and the dedication cere- monies of the new buildings. They also played a Christmas Concert and ended the year with their annual Spring Concert. At Galena, Illinois, in the District Contest, the band received a rating of excellent. The band was composed of approximately one- half grade and one-half high school students ranging from 6th grade through seniors. The band President was Carol Cheeseman: the Vice President was Joe Warner, the Librarian was Gayle Nelson and the Secretary was Ardath Flack. With the addition of our new instruments and the new band room, the band has achieved musically a far greater degree of advancement than ever before. We are looking forward to even greater accomplishments T . 2 ' i ,Q 3 in the future. 1

a ' v c -1 ' x Twenty-nine members of the mixed chorus, directed by Mr. McPherson, played an important part in the an- nual spring concert. Their numbers were No Man Is An lsland, This Is My Father's World, and Catch A Falling Starg they were accompanied on the piano by Beatrice Swalve. The chorus also sang at two other programs during the year, a Good Friday service and the Christmas pro- gram. Soloists were Janice Elseman and Gayle Nelson. On Tuesday and Thursday, during rehearsals, Mr. McPherson led the group in studies of intervals, scales, and sightsinging. Nearly all of the prepared numbers were sung in three-part harmonyg soprano, alto, and baritone. Sectional rehearsals sometimes comprised whole class periods, after which the sections were fitted together into harmony. The group enjoyed themselves very much and were a good example of the type of activity that improves the culture of our school. This page sponsored by WEIGLE'S CLOVER FARM STORE, Shannon, Ill.
