THE LAURION 1934 THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC Affer such a successful year of music in 1933, fhe music deparfmenf of fhe Shaffer High School confinued wifh renewed vigor ifs proiecfs in I934 under fhe apf leadership of lvlr. Safes. The Boys' Glee Club has made many appearances which have all been hearfily applauded. They have sung af P. T. A., af fhe Women's Club, Teachers' lnsfifufe, and also offered fwo numbers befween acfs of fhe icnool play, The Red-l-leaded Sfep-child , which was presenfed in fhe a . The orchesfra, composed of fwenfy-one pieces and direcfed by Mr. Safes, has also had a profifable year. They have accompanied fhe Boys' Glee Club pracfically everywhere and have given pleasing aid fo all of fhe programs which have been launched. When if was decided fo puf on again anofher canfafa, fhe boys and girls immediafely ioined forces as fhe combined chorus and puf forfh fheir earnesf efforfs. The sfory chosen was Joseph , which followed closely fhe Biblical accounf. The casf included: Donald Suydam-Joseph: Lois Van Gorkom-Joseph's sisferq l-larold Van Gorkom-Jacob: Richard l-lefz-Reubanq Waldo Unruh-Judah, Grace Weyand-Princess: Rosie Unruh-Angel: Richard Arnold-King, Evelyn Unruh-Queen. All parfs were very well played, and everyone worked hard fo fhe very end fo make if successful. As a resulf if was accounfed as good if nof beffer fhan lasf year's. During fhe period preceding fhe presenfafion of Joseph , all fhree deparfmenfs of music puf on various parfs of fhe canfafa in programs abouf fhe communify. The firsf of fhese was a program given af fhe Bapfisf church on Sunday nighf, and a similar program was presenfed af fhe Mennonife church fhe following Sunday. The fhree deparfmenfs fook parf in fhe Musical Fesfival af Wasco. They gave an Easfer Sunrise Service for fhe communify. This was a new fhing here, buf was well re- ceived. All who heard fhese selecfions declared fhe sample was so good fhey would surely hear fhe resf. The affendance was epoch making. A frumpef ocfeffe was formed under fhe leadership of Allen Barfel. lf was composd of Allen Barfel, Mike Janzen, Waldo Unruh, Richard l-lefz, Johnny Penner, Louis Edwards, and Arnof Annis. This new proiecf was ample compensafion for fhe loss of The Girls' Trio, broken by graduafion. As a grand finale, fhe deparfmenf gave numbers af baccalaureafe and graduafion. Though all members have given fheir besf whenever called upon, fhey could nof have had such a happy and prosperous year wifhouf fhe capable direcfion of fheir leader, lvlr.
