T2 5 Fai:- Published by Students of SHAFTER HIGH SCHOOL SHAFTER, CALIFORNIA I To Glenn O. N ay, who has been our teacher friend, and adviser for tlae past tloree years, we gratefully dedicate this 1932 edition of the Lanrion. Foreword OR three years the Agricul- lgture department has had Winning teamsg they have seldom gone to the contests with- out returning victorious. Mr. Nay has been responsible for their success. The LAURION Staff has carried out the symbol of the Winning cup in honor of Mr. Nay's Work. We hope that Shafter High may always be the Winner, not only in the agricul- tural line, but also in everything else it attempts. Paradise I'm not looking for a golden gate Nor streets of gold, so cold, But for a little white gate covered with roses And a winding path bordered with flowers so bold. I'm not looking for a golden palace With its many beautiful rooms full of gloom, But for a small honey-suckle covered cottage With its few rooms perfumed with the honey-suckle's bloom Fm not looking for a perfect rose garden With its rows so stately and gay, But for an old-fashioned flower garden With its many sweet flowers in array. I'm not looking for a river of gold With its Eldorado beckoning to me, But for a cheery, little creek of old Singing its way down to the sea. lim not looking for gayly colored birds With their golden songs But for a gray mocking bird Who sings the whole day long. We have striven forward toward this for four years. As rough inexperienced miners, we entered here a few years ago, as full-fledged miners we leave today. We are the first to brave four years of labor to make this mine more productive. When we started, there were only three foremen in charge and only fifty odd miners all told. The next year we lost a few of our hard-working pals, and gained a few more. We added three more fore- men to our ranks and blasted through to more substantial ore. During the third year, under the direction of nine experienced persons, we helped with our Hrst really big project, the production of a book, tell- ing the story of some of our fellow friends farther advanced than we. At the end of that year we lost one of our faithful leaders, Mrs. Robertson, who had guided us through many of the treacherous places. However, on the whole, we found we had made great strides. This year, our fourth year, we discover that we have nearly reached the rich pure ore for which we have struggled so long. We are honored and praised by those below us, and urged on by those above. So far, we have been under the direction of our trusted foremen, but now each of us must choose which lode he will follow in the future. Together we reached the first one, together, in spirit, we shall reach greater and more perfect lodes. In the years to come no one can take from us the knowledge we gained from these years of struggle. With coura- geous hearts we will face life, as we faced the mine, and prove to the world that we are good miners. EFFIE LEE THOMAS. We have the distinction of having triumphed over all the other classes in the interclass track meet. In football, our class was represented by several stars on the team. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was pronounced by all to be one of the best of the season. To lend our aid to all school affairs, several of our members Hlled important roles in the student body dramatic productions and in student body offices. We are looking forward to our Senior year with much enthusiasm. Officers: Reynold Mettler, President, William Johnson, Treasurer, Margaret Koehn, Secretary, Mr. Gates, Adviser. Sophomores We, the Sophomore class, began our second year of high school life jubilantly by giving an initiation party in honor of the Freshmen. Soon after this we turned our attention toward the ticket selling con- test for the student body play, Honor Bright . We upheld the tradition of the Sophomores of last year by winning the contest. The Sophomore class participated with great enthusiasm in all school activities, such as plays, sports, musical and social events. To Miss Sullivan, our class adviser for two years, we extend our most sincere thanks and appreciation. Officers: Blynn Scott, President, Alvina Hildebrand, Secretary, La Rue Livers, Vice-President, Daphne McKinley, Treasurer, Miss Frasquita Sullivan, Adviser. Freshmen The Freshmen became full-fledged members of the school at the initia- tion and have been well represented in all school activities, having mem- bers on the baseball, football, basketball and track teams, and in the stu- dent body play. On March 11 we gave our first party in high school. We are looking forward to three more happy years in Shafter High. We thank Mr. Wilson, our class adviser, for his help and co-operation. Officers: Clifford Mettler, President, Robert McClain, Vice-Presi- dent, Susie Penner, Secretary-Treasurer, Mr. James V. Wilson, Adviser. 11 If I Could Have My Way If I could only have my way There is plenty I would do, But someone always bothers me Before I'm half way through. Miss Gloeckler The Girls' League of the Shafter High School was organized under the direction of Miss Habicht in 1928, and has played an active part in school affairs. One of the most outstanding projects of this year was the serving of lunch by the league to the football boys after each game. Much of the success was due to the Way the committee in charge supervised the affair, and also to the co-operation of the student body. April 16 the girls enjoyed Play Day at Taft, which was sponsored by the G. A. A. of the school. Each girl entered in some sport and, in that Way, helped to further friendship and sportsmanship between the schools and indi- viduals present. Miss Gloeckler was appointed Girls' Councilor. Social, personal, and school problems Were studied in groups and discussed individually. This Work was started late this year, and the next year a regular program of activities will be worked out by the Girls' League oflicers and Miss Gloeckler. 18 9 E LAURI Future Farmers of Amer1ca Shaffer Cloapfer OFFICERS Earl Gunther Prcvlderzi Reynold Mettler Secrefary Treasurer Glenn O Nay Azlwser The Shafter Future Farmers of Amer1ca Chapter was orgaruzed 1n 1929 for boys seek1ng practlcal knowledge of farmmg and of farm l1Ve stock They took actwe part 1n all judg1ng contests held 1n the state durmg the last three years The1r motto 1S Learnlng to do d01ng to learn learmng to l1ve and hvmg to serve Th1S year the da1ry products team won two cups at the Pacrfic Slope Da1ry Show and three cups at the Los Angeles County Farr They also judged 1n the State Faxr All three teams judged at the Fresno and DaV1s contests The da1ry products team cons1st1ng of Ben Peters Harold Voth and Pete Epp d1d the outstandmg work of the season In 1931 a member of the club won the project contest 1n field crops for San oaqu1n Valley Some of the outstandmg projects of th1s year are Howard Weyand s two feeder steers whxch he w1ll show at the San Franclsco Fat Stock Show 1n November Reynold Mettler s truck crop of on1ons Cllfford Mettler s plot of potatoes Rolhn Dargatz s five hundred Rhode Island Red cltucks Ernest Schna1dt s acres of beans Joe Engle s two hundred Wh1te Leghorn ch1cks +5f19F't l 3 2 rr 5 vw 1 an xx T H O N 1 A V, , ,,,. ,..- -V ,. The plot was involved, dealing with the actions of an actress, a rich family and a book agent. Helen Rilcoif, as Honor Bright, gave a splendid performance as the book agent. Emil Hein, as Richard Barrington, was perfectly correct and handsome. Frances Midgley, charmingly portrayed Richard's mother. Blynn Scott and Annabell Wedge were the happily married rich aunt and uncle. Emma Schnaidt portrayed the actress and Gerald Bosserdet her lover. The servant staff was made up of Anne Richter, Catherine Carter, Pete Epp, Earl Gunther, and Allen Bartel. Lawrence Annis was another preacher and his brother, Durward Annis, was the town sheriff. Allen's portrayal of the Scotch gardener, and Pete Epp's characterization of the straight-laced butler caused a great deal of merriment. The play was directed by Martha Barnett and was a great success. The Family Upstairsw The Family Upstairs was given by the Juniors and Seniors on April eighth. It was without a doubt the snappiest comedy ever presented by the high school. All of the cast fitted their parts perfectly, from Gerald Bosserdet, the stern father, to Effie Lee Thomas, the gawky baby daugh- ter. The play deals with a mother who tries to marry her oldest daughter to a worthy person and nearly fails. Olive Sly and Pete Epp were the young sweethearts. Frances Midgley, the scheming mother, Lorena Voth, the seamstress, and Ewing Hite, as Pete's baby brother, completed the cast. Howard Weyand and Pete Koehn were the stage managers for both plays, and Lorena Voth was in charge of properties. Sarah Scott was assistant director of Honor Bright' and LaRue Livers assisted in the direction of The Family Upstairs . To Martha Barnett, director of all plays for the past two years, goes the credit of these fine productions. -..sqf 21 Ea..- THE LAuR1oN s , ,, I9 Mountains Mountains, trees, and flowers!
