The experimental P.O. D. class conducted the elections of the student body officers, the stu- dent council officers, and the individual class offi- cers patterned from our state and national elec- tions. Any qualified student desiring to run for office could do so by entering a petition. Then there was much campaigning and the halls were filled with posters and signs. Students were re- quired to register before voting. This class learned from experience how to become better citizens. During the school year they went to the Moundsville prison, to a trial in St. Clairsville, and carried on their own mock trial. They had many activi- ties throughout the year that were both enter- taining and educational. This year the Red Cross sponsored an assembly at which they had a Bel- gium priest as guest speaker. They packed boxes of gifts and sent them to children overseas. They participated in a nation-wide campaign for polio. The home nursing courses in which the members learned the fundamentals of home nursing proved interesting and informative. Their efforts deserve acclaim. Html MM, vski, N. Kaveski J. Lemmon, J. Pracht To further the cause of peace, the youth of the nation, regardless of race, creed or religion, were given an opportunity to participate in a peace contest. The requirement of each con- testant was to memorize a declamation that had been written by a college student, and then pre- sent it to an audience in a local church. If he won first place in his hometown church, he was eligible to go on to a county, a district, a semi- final or a final contest. The reward for the final winner was a college scholarship in the college of his choice. Shadyside was very proud of our own Carol Meddings who made the grade all the way to the semi-finals. A contest of this kind gives young people a deeper insight of the meaning of peace, besides giving them an opportunity to earn a scholarship.
