Three years ago their dream came true when they were asked to give up the old athletic field to make way for new industry-the Kaiser-Frazer plant. This group has been instrumental in paving the way for Shadyside's most notable happening. A new athletic field has been planned and is being developed. The only reward these mem- bers hope for is the satisfaction of working and helping to develop better school facilities for the boys and girls of their community. Kuatodzhn, The maintenance of the high school building is a great responsibility. Many tasks are effi- ciently performed when we so often do not realize it. Throughout the year, while students are re- ceiving guidance in learning from their teachers, the janitor keeps other phases of the school run- ning smoothly. When you recall the neat, clean classrooms, the carefully groomed grounds and the sidewalks that were cleared of snow, you know that it was all due to the untiring efforts of the custodian, Joe Truax, and his helpers. They had several programs on good looks and good grooming. At one meeting the members brought in their favorite recipes which the typing class mimeographed and they then made them up into cook books. THE FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA club, under the leadership of Miss Velma Rodeter and Miss Anna Hranko, was composed of prospective members of the teaching profession. They were informed about the opportunities in the teaching field. The members helped teachers by grading papers, doing odd iobs, and doing substitute teaching when the opportunity arose. One high- light of the year was the presentation of an as- sembly program in which they portrayed the qualities of a good sport and the qualities of a poor sport at basketball games. The requirement of each con- testant was to memorize a declamation that had been written by a college student, and then pre- sent it to an audience in a local church. If he won first place in his hometown church, he was eligible to go on to a county, a district, a semi- final or a final contest. The reward for the final winner was a college scholarship in the college of his choice. Shadyside was very proud of our own Carol Meddings who made the grade all the way to the semi-finals. A contest of this kind gives young people a deeper insight of the meaning of peace, besides giving them an opportunity to earn a scholarship. Any qualified student desiring to run for office could do so by entering a petition. Then there was much campaigning and the halls were filled with posters and signs. Students were re- quired to register before voting. This class learned from experience how to become better citizens. During the school year they went to the Moundsville prison, to a trial in St. Clairsville, and carried on their own mock trial. The students found this an entertaining ex- perience as well as an educational one. I 3 0 tatek, D. Hall, D. Gallaher only . First row-Mrs, Dunfee, J. Fleming, M Smith, C. Gulash, P, Rennie, J. It took a lot of research and trips out west, but the cowboys came through in the end. Seriously though, there was a great deal of work connected with publishing a yearbook. The first big iob was that of the advertising crew. They were responsible for contacting the businesses throughout the valley and securing advertisements for our book. They made many trips and did a lot of talking. l Another important iob was the taking of snaps of the events as they occurred during the year. This included snaps of basketball, foot- ball, assemblies, and classroom activities. The advertising manager, Don Hall, had a fine crew that contacted people for Shadean sub- scriptions. He also saw that all bills were paid. The editor, Suzie Maury, shouldered a great responsibility. Hers was the task of seeing that the layout was satisfactory, that the captions and writeups matched the pictures, and finally that as many snaps as possible were taken throughout the year. Yes, she with the help of assistant editor, Carol Meddings, saw that every- thing fitted in with the plan of the book. The Shadean adviser, Miss Swamberg, gave many helpful hints. With her advice and guid- ance, the staFf published this book and learned some valuable points about yearbood editing. 1951 swim. sum Suzie Maury . . ,. The play centered around a brother and a sister who were killed in an automobile accident, and had come back to haunt their house so that no one could live there. A young couple, deeply in love, came to live there, so the young ghosts set about to haunt them. But between mystical happenings in the house and the traditional mother-in-law trouble, the young couple were leaving their happy marriage. Upon realizing this, the young ghosts could no longer continue to haunt them, so they left them to reconcile and then went on to heaven. The cast will long be applauded for their outstanding performance in this play. THE CAST Agatha Bixby . Polly Vickers , Gertrude Ralston Vera Hale . .,..., , Arthur Hale .,... Amy Fitzgerald . The game was played on a drenched field and neither team threatened seriously until the final period when the Shadeans fought their way to the Indian three-yard stripe where the ball was fumbled by an over-anxious carrier and recovered by the opposition. It looked like a scoreless deadlock, for there were only six minutes left, but an alert defense came through to recover a Powhatan fumble two plays later and save the final home game for the Cas- ketmakers. They seemed to iust be getting under way for the game ended with Shadyside in pos- session on the Indian fifteen and going strong. BARNESVILLE The finale found the Casketmakers drop a 33-25 decision to the Shamrocks in a wide open battle of long gains by both sides. Although the field was fast and muddy, there were many long passes featured. Ronnie Weekly tossed beauti- fully to keep the Shadeans in the game, while Vucelich did the gaining on the ground, but the winless Barnesville eleven wanted this one too much to be denied. Playing their last game in the Orange and Black uniforms were: Jack Saunders, Bill Glasgow, Ed Cerny, Jack Patt, Nate Hocker, John Melanko, Joe Dawson, John Vucelich, Ronald Weekly, Don Bumgardner, Wil- liam Schaefer, Don Gallaher and Joe Maurer. TILTONSVILLE The Shadeans came roaring back from their defeat to upset the favored Ramblers 7-6, thanks to Bill GIasgow's conversion. It was a thriller all the way and it showed Shadyside playing a fine defensive game in holding Tiltonsville to six points. Proving this in the last few minutes of play was Joe Dawson, Shadean right end, breaking thru to block the Rambler kick for extra point. Credit goes to the entire 'team for the win. ST. CLAIRSVILLE Once again the O. B. lost a heart-breaker, this time to the Red Devils from St. Clairsville. Again it was a break which decided the game and again it was against us. At the first six min- utes, the Red Devils had a T3 point lead, enough to take the fight out of any team. In the second half, however, an inspired Shadean eleven minus the services of two of their regulars, fought their way back into the game. They scored three times in that half, holding St. C. to a lone TD, only to find their efforts fall short by a one point margin. BRIDGEPORT Heads-up football and fine defensive work produced a fourth victory for the Shadeans. All but one of their four touchdowns came thru the air as they downed Bridgeport, 27-7. End, Jack Saunders, playing standout ball both offensively and defensively all year, re- peated again, throwing the Bulldog backs for fre- quent losses, scoring one touchdown and setting up another. He had plenty of help though, from boys like Nate Hocker, Ed Cerny, John Melanko, and Jack Patt, who all have played steady ball. It marked the first time the Shadeans scored so early and stayed ahead by a healthy margin. BELLAIRE ln our opening game against the strong Big Reds, the Casketmakers were definitely the un- derdogs so far as statistics showed before the game, but it wasn't long before they were proven wrong. Shadyside might not have had the depth, weight nor speed which Bellaire pos- sessed, but they more than made up for it with their new spirit as one of the maior upsets of the year seemed near at some anxious moments. Shadyside put on a beauty of a show in battling the Reds and gave a preview of what was to come. DENNISON Shadyside's first victory came over a surpris- ingly stubborn Dennison team. They got off to a slow start but by the half started rolling, and the team, led by Johnny Vucelich and Co-Captain Rich Ramser, took complete charge. They showed what they were made of by coming from behind twice to gain a 27-T3 win over the Dennisonites, their third over them. The Casketmakers were off UNION The iron men from Union were the victims for our second victory, and it was the Shadeans first home game. They made the most of it by coming up on the right side ofa 20-T 2 count. The game saw our boys improving steadily, and that they were going to spell trouble for many a team, for again they had to come from behind in de- feating a victory-starved team. YORKVlLLE The Shadeans evened up their record with a T3-6 loss to the Ductillites. The game proved to be a loss in more ways than one. Two of Shadyside's stalwarts, Fullback Dick Ramser and End Jack Saunders were iniured in the second quarter and were out for the rest of the game. Even though the O. B. tried to overcome a 'I3 point deficit, they couldn't quite make it. They scored late and threatened again in the final minutes. lt was a rough game and one in which breaks decided everything. TILTONSVILLE-Both teams battled furiously all the way, the Ramblers winning in overtime, Shadyside losing no face in dropping it. ST. JOHNS-The Irish of St. Johns handed the Orange of Shadyside their second defeat in three games, their new court being too much for the visitors. CLARINGTON-Shadyside topped the River Rats in this one 5l-40. The fans were entertained at half-time by an amusing game of Boxerball. CLAIRSVILLE-The Orangemen atoned for an earlier two point loss by drubbing the Red Devils, 63-47. , BELLAIRE--The Big Reds edged the Casketmakers 64-56 vic- tory, one which might have gone either way. WEST LIBERTY-The Hilltoppers threw a scare into the Orange by leading in the final quarter until a last minute rally finally routed them. MAGNOLIA-The league leaders had a rough time taking this one from the Shadyside crew who tried their best to cop this important one before going down 5B-54. Its seasonal record of twelve wins and seven losses put it among the leaders ofthe Class A league. It showed a well- balanced team by placing three players, Saun- ders, Barton, and Bittengle, among the top fifteen scorers in the Ohio Valley. This gave the Sha- deans a decided punch in their offensive play and made them a threat in every contest, aver- aging 57.8 points per game. For the first time in over a decade, a Shady- side quintet beat a Rambler five in playing one of their best games of the year, both oFFensively and defensively. Also forthe first time in years, the Orange turned back a Ductillite team twice in a season, avenging their two losses to them last year.
