During the past year some major improvements were made to our school buildings, and whenever conditions permitted, they made every effort toward the ad- vancement of our educational opportunities. The fine spirit of cooperation manifested by the faculty and student body was appreciated by the board. f1Ul MISS MARY C. Neither can We, but here we are three rungs up on the ladder of the so-called ladder of education. We climbed from verdant freshmen, to silly sophomores, to jolly juniors. We may have had other names given us, too, but this is not the time and place to discuss that. Instead, we Wish to show that the junior class has been doing things to get this far in life. Our four officers this year are a fair representation of the class Who elected them. President, Harold Campbell, had a big year with committees for class dances, parties, class rings and junior-senior prom. Vice-president, Bob Hughes, could be seen helping him many times, Secretary-treasurer, Betty Ault, was the most popular person ever-she had the job of getting money in for all the above occasions. Historian, Mickey Franks, helped make a great deal of the history of the class besides recording it. Our class was Well represented in the Girl Reserves, Band, I-li-Y, Shadean Staff, Orange et Noir, Charmettes, glee clubs and the scholarship team. Many of our class took part in sports such as, football, basketball, track and base- ball. Others participated in planning the class party and dance, class play and junior- senior prom. This delightful, rollicking comedy of college life had been played with success on the pro- fessional stage and had for its locale, the sorority house on a Southern Cali- fornia campus. The situations were excrutiatingly funny and the characters true to life. The play was interesting because of the main plot-that of a girls' sorority house quarantined while some boys were still inside. The ac- tions were swift, the dialogue clever and witty and the actions were almost bewildering in the many mix-ups that Went to make Campus Quarantine the merry, mad, crazy but delightful play that it was. What put the pep in our pep meet- ings? The answer to these questions is a cry from Shadyside students-the Orange- clad musicians of Shadyside High. The Shadyside band completed a suc- cessful year under the leadership of Mr. Ioseph Trosak. After many hours of tireless effort on the part of the band, they were richly rewarded by the deep appreciation of music enthusiasts throughout the valley. Football fans thrilled at the sight of the interesting formations of the musicmen, They also performed at a few of the basket- ball games. The musicmakers appeared at Oglebay l 2 Park to play in a mass band under the lead- ing hand of the director of the Marine Band. They also appeared at the dedication of the new Wheeling airport, and the great one- hundreth year celebration of Stone and Thomas, Beautiful music was heard flowing from the portals of Shadyside High on March 28. ln other words, it was the night of the an- nual Music Festival. The program consisted of numbers by the boys' and girls' glee clubs, mixed chorus, junior high band and the high school concert band. As an added attraction the fifth grade tonette classes played a few short numbers. This proved very interesting for these fifth graders will make the band members of l95U. FRONT ROW: Mr. Trosak, band director, Gibson Shanley, Bena Keating, Frances Sammons, Sal- ly Boston. SECOND ROW1 Bob Morgan, Mary lo Iohnson, Ruth Lee Truax, Margaret Ann Harris, Colletta Potetz, lean McVey, Charlotte Podruzek, Betty lean Ault, Katherine Podlasizk, Barbara Ash- ton, Frances Brown, Emmet Millet, George Brannen. THIRD ROW: Bud Davis, Erma Heath, Phyllis Davis, Sherland Anderson, Bill Pim, Richard Pum- pa, Iames Hall, Robert Ault, lack Iones, Richard lerico. The final touch to the years activities was offered in the form of a banquet and dance sponsored by the Band Mothers for the band members and their guests. For loyalty and colorful display, the band and their director, Mr. loseph Trosak, are deserving of our highest praise. We are justly proud of the Shadyside Band! MAIORETTES The four high-stepping girls who provid- ed the glamour-angle for the Shadyside band during the past season were, Bena Keating, Frances Sammons, Phyllis Slack, and Ioyce Nicholson. Wearing snappy White uniforms they took their place in front of the Orange-clad mu- sicmakers and marched their Way through another season of thrilling football games. I2 The performances of the Twirlers this past year were marked by several different rous tines and stunts including the use of two batons. At the last home game the use of lights was employed for a unique setting which caused many favorable comments. 9 Phyllis Slack, Ioyce Nicholson, Bena Keating, Frances Sammons MIXED CHORUS q During the past year the Shadyside Mixed Chorus had reached new heights and had added many new laurels to its list of ac- complishments. The mixed chorus was made up of sixty boys and girls. The mixed chorus made their first ap- pearance of the year in the high school auditorium in September when they partici- pated in a program for the Meade Town- ship Fair. They appeared in the Christmas program in December. To climax their suc- cessful year the mixed chorus sang at Bac- calaureate and the spring concert This group enjoyed their work under the direc- tion of Mr. Ioseph Trosalc. 4 14 BOYS' GLEE CLUB Nothing is quite so pleasing to the ear as the sound of youth singing. We, at Shady- side are fortunate to have among us such well-trained male voices which made up the boys' glee club. The club meetings were on Tuesdays and Thursdays where lively and harmonious songs were enjoyed by every member. The boys hope that in the future they will have more boys join them. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Clear young voices lifted in song filled Christmas program and the spring concert. the air on rehearsal mornings. The group The fifty girls of the glee club and their sang on many programs such as Girl Re- director, Mr. Trosak, are proud of the role serve assemblies, Meade Township Fair, they played in Shadyside musical life. I 3 O PROIECTION CLUB This year the projection club completed its work again under the supervision of Mr. Kroll. The main duties of the members were to show movies and slides to the various rooms and classes in both buildings. The projection club also set up the loud speakers for the dances. Dale McC1eod was elected president for the pres- ent year. The club is to be congratulated on its excellent work of the score board during the past grid sea- son. The school received some new equipment for the football field and will put it to use next year. OFFICE FORCE The group of girls that kept our school day functioning smoothly was Mr. Wright's office force. The duties of the office force were many. You might see them doing such things as, ring- ing bells on time, running errands for Mr. Wright, collecting absence slips, answering the tele- phone, helping fellow students and greeting new students to the school. Office girls receive experience that may be used in their work after graduation. Mr. Wright and the student body were deeply indebted to these girls for their splendid work and cooperation. The poetry contest was sponsored by the Na- tional High School Poetry Association. All high schools were permitted to participate. The only special requirement, was to be a high school student. The contestants were permitted to en- ter as many poems as they wished. The winning poems were accepted for publication in the an- nual anthology of the National High School Poe- try Association, Los Angeles, California. The winners and the titles of their masterpieces are as follows: Io Ellen Harris, Thanksgiving In- flation , Ella Mae Hart, Evening , Mary lane Schramm, Be Thankful , and Ruth Ann Morris, The Iourneyf' l32l Y-TEENS The Y-Teens of Shadyside High proved to be one of the best extra-curricular organizations in the school. That is true not only for services ren- dered to the students and faculty but to the com- munity as well. There were one hundred four' teen girls in the club. Among the varied activities of the Worthy club, formerly known as the Girl Reserves, were collec- tions of food and money for the poor and needy at Christmas and Thanksgiving. The theme for this year was Y-Teens Sing Along. All of the meetings and parties had titles of songs for the topics. The club sponsored many social activities throughout the year including the Winter Won- derland Ball held in December and the Cocoa- nut Song Dance held in March and the year was highlighted by the Mother and Daughter Tea in May. The Y-Teens are a branch of the Y. W. C. A. and follow the work done by that group. The members of the club realize much of the success of the group was due to the fine leadership of their president, Esther Morris, and the faithful- ness of Miss Velma Rodefer and Miss Ruth Ann Neptune, the club advisers. Orange et Noir Although this is the first year of the Orange et Noir a publication has existed before under the name of the Teen Tatler. The Orange et Noir edited by members of the staff was under the direction of Mrs. losephine Hess. The purpose of this publication was to re- cord the news of Shadyside High School, 4 but also afforded features and jokes. The name of our paper is a French phrase meaning Orange and Black and is taken from the High School coat of arms. Much credit should be given to those staff members whose duty was selecting ma- terial, making assignments and making up the page. HI-Y The Hi-Y is a group composed of boys in the upper three grades of High School. The club is run and ruled by the slogan To create, maintain and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. The boys have to live up to certain requirements before presented with membership cards. They must also go through an informal initiation. The club un- dertakes such projects as may be of help to school and community. The organization has purchased banking boards for our gym- nasium. The treasury receives its money from the sales of football programs. This year the club was sponsored by a group of business men throughout the city, and the new adviser was Mr. Trosak. His cooperation and hard work proved that he is capable of the job. The officers Who served the club this year were: President, Arthur Browng Vice president, Willard Da- vis, Secretary, Mickey Franks, Treasurer, Robert Rode-fer, Sergeant-at-arms, D. l. Griffiths. The club was composed of 35 members and held a Wiener roast during the fall. They also set up equipment and operated the public address system for the Christmas season- The activities were brought to a grand finale by a formal dance held in the school gym. LIBRARIAN CLUB The Librarian Club was a group of seven- teen girls. Miss Ianet Gregg, county libra- rian Was the adviser of the group. Mrs. Mildred McKelvey, Shadyside librarian, trained the girls in their jobs. The club was in charge of the library in the morning and assisted Mrs. McKelvey in the afternoon. Since this Was the first year for the libra- ry in its new home, this Was the first time that the librarians had an organized club. The club also had several social functions l35l such as a Christmas exchange and a ban- quet. The club helped the library cele- brate its tenth anniversary by giving talks in homerooms about the library and aiding in the openhouse program. The club aided the students in many Ways and we are grateful to them, The officers of the club Were: President, Mary Frances Grovesg Vice president, Do- reen Ionesg Secretary, Io Ellen Harris, Treas- urer, Elia Badia. . Los Cabelleros Alegres The Spanish Club, Los Cabelleros Aleg- res , was organized at the beginning of the school term by the first year Spanish stu- dents. After selecting the name, which in ingles means The Gay Knight, the fol- lowing officers were elected: President, Bob Roberto Wattg Vice'president, Io Ellen Elena l-larrisg Secretary-Treasurer, Mari- lyn Maria Schaefer. El Presidente Watt conducted the meet- ings which were held every Friday. At these meetings a thorough study was made of our amigos south of the border and South America. Discussions contained in- teresting information of their customs, geog- raphy and agricultural products. A great amount of time was devoted to conversation in Spanish among the students who used their selected Spanish names. Another thing of great interest to the Spanish stu- dents was the ordering of song sheets in Spanish, which we enjoyed singing Very much along with La Professorau Miss Whiteman. Until next year, when we return as a big- ger and better Spanish club, we Los Ca- belleros Alegres de mil novecientos cuaren- ta y siete say Saludos amigosf' El Circulo Catorce The purpose of the Spanish club was to make a closer study of the Spanish-Ameri- can countries and to perfect a speaking knowledge of Spanish. Small pamphlets on each country which contained basic facts, such as when the country was discovered and by whom, his- tory since discovery, and when it became a country, were placed at our disposal by the adviser. Through this information we came to a closer understanding of our Southern neighbors. Then, too, with the aid of the projection club we achieved a better understanding of the customs of the countries through the pictures furnished by the club. Every Friday we held a meeting. The l 36 president, Sam Vucelich, called it to order. He then had the secretary, Robert Newhart, read the minutes of the preceding meeting, in Spanish, after which we took up the old and new business. Then came the conver- sation period. During this period we spoke Spanish. After that the Vice-president, Tom l-laythorne, was in charge of the program for the week. This usually consisted of the study of one South American country. After the program the meeting was ad- journed by the president. They went into the fray against an under-estimated Big Red squad. The battle was even most of the way, with the Shadeans starting an early threat in the first stanza. ln the fourth period the Orange began to roll with passes but the game ended with both teams undefeated in a U-U draw. POWHATAN Bouncing back from an expected tie, the Cas- ketmakers of Shadyside, led by fleet-footed Tom- my Saunders, trounced a heavy Indian eleven 25-O. While the Powhatan boys were unable to muster up a serious threat, Saunders scored four times on a lateral from DeCola. ELDERS RIDGE The Casketmakers went into the game with Elders Ridge without knowing a thing about the ability of their opponents. Mr. Pinotte and crew proved worthy competition for the Orange when i381 in the first stanza they scored on a 72-yard run. From there on it was Shadyside all the way sparked by the brilliant line play of Bunky Mayhugh and Pete Green. It was a win-2l-6. YORKVILLE lt was a determined, undefeated Yorkville eleven that dumped the Orange from the ranks of the undefeated 20-12. The York's pushed over two touchdowns after being a constant threat in the first half. The next quarter found the Orange striking back as Krupnik intercepted a pass and scored. The Shadeans scored six more points but were still behind l3-12. Then Chuck Hood broke away and put the game on ice for Yorkville, by scoring on a 73-yard run. TILTONSVILLE The Orange were back in top form after their first defeat. The Shadeans struck twice in the second period to score l2 points. The second half was fairly even but Shadyside copped another victory 18-7. ' , ,aol , , .- A 1 mfg' TOM SAM SAUNDERS RALPH HURLEY VUCELICH f ,- i Q ,. CLAIRSVILLE The Saints were favored to remain undefeated, but the Shadeans went all out for this one and could not be denied winning l2-U. A bad cen- ter was pulled in by Sam Vucelich in the end zone for the only score in the first half. The sec- ond half proved that the Shadeans could have Won without their good break as they scored again. This time on good heads-up football, BRIDGEPORT Early in the game the Shadeans found the T formation a tough nut to crack and the Bulldogs scored, but the Orange were not to be denied. Before the end of the half, the count was knotted at 6 all. The Shadeans scored again in the third Canto, to go out in front l2-6. Bridgeport tied the score on a fumble at 12-l2. Shadyside, not satisfied with a tie decided to gamble and try to salvage the game, but the gamble backfired. A Bulldog hauled in a Shadyside heave and scampered to pay-dirt. The extra point followed and ended the scoring at 19-12 in favor of the Bulldogs of Bridgeport. FOLLANSBEE It was an over-confident Shadean eleven that took to the field at Follansbee. Thefirst quarter was a punting dual. The second quarter was a f39l different song. lt was all Follansbee, as they carried a l9-O count to showers with them at half time. Shadyside's only score came in the fourth period, on a pass from Vucelich to Dawson, Krup- nik added the conversion. Final score 19-7. ROCHESTER The Rams of Rochester, who were expecting to give the Shadeans the worst licking they had given any team all year, were amazed to find that the Orange and Black were tougher than they had estimated. At half-time they found they were leading by a small margin of 12-6. A fumble and a forward pass gave the Rams a touchdown making the score 18-6. Late in the fourth quarter the Shadeans scored on a pass from Krupnik to Dawson. This ended the scoring for the evening at 18-12. DILLONVALE The season's final saw the Shadeans on their home field with eight starting seniors. The game ended in a 27-7 victory for Shadyside. The Shadeans had the Night Riders subdued most of the game, they came to life long enough to score 7 points. The game closed the 1946 season for Shady- side with 5 wins, 4 losses, and a tie. .41 ,, NIGHT GAMES AT SHADYSIDE HIGH ls it a first down???? .... l.et's get in there and tightllll .... Coach 'xChip Coupland inherited a veteran squad which finished the season in second place with a 8 wins and 4 losses. Here is the squad: Walter Krupnik's sparkling play on the initial sack made him the best first baseman in the valley. Krupnik added further brilliance to his play by twirling a one-hit shut- out against St. Clairsville. George Dawson, Shadean pitcher and key- stone sacker, who played a year of errorless ball, was another valley standout. I-le was middle man of the double play combination. Sam Vucelich received five offers to play pro baseball and that alone gives ample reason for the team's field captain to be recognized as Mr, Shortstopf' Bob l-leidelbach completed the Shadean in- field at third base and will be missed when next season rolls around. Melvin Vucelich looked like a Big Leaguer in left field and made the hard, high, long flies look like pop-up, Bob Dawson patrolled the middle of the outer gardens with ease and ran the opposing pitchers ragged with his dancing on the basepaths. Steve Farrier, playing his first year, complet- ed a perfect outfield. The husky right fielder l 4 pleased the fans by his strange ability to draw bases on balls. He played second when Daw- son pitched. Bob Krnyaich, the dynamic little catcher of the Shadeans was the heart of the team. He directed the defensive play and for his size, hit a long ball. Mickey Franks took over right field while Far- rier played second base and had a very impres- sive batting average. I've been to town .... my dog's bigger than yours .... but mine's smarter .... Whew! it's warm . . . . the height of ambition . . . . brotherly love . . . . E471 AUTOGRAPHS Dizzy and Daffy Dizzy and Daffy, a hilarious comedy, in three acts, was presented by the Senior class, on May 9. The story revolves about the pranks of Daffy Renshaw, a precocious young girl of fifteen and Dizzy Burton, fresh from London, England, Dizzy and Daffy become involved in a plot designed to bring about the marriage of Daffy's Aunt Maude Marlin, who is in love with the memory of an old sweetheart, to Austin Chandler, a Wealthy and per- sistent bachelor. Rose Renshaw, Aunt Maude's charming young niece, and her ardent suitor, Sherwood Lang, heartily approve the match. When Daffy pawns off Chester Getty, who is suffering from amnesia, as Chauncey, Aunt Maude's long lost lover, confusion results. Anita Marshland, who has her eye on Austin's fortune, and lo Ann Farley, the girl next door, complicate matters. Lizzie Abbott, a nurse engaged to care for the amnesia victim wel- comes the unexpected arrival of Harriet Getty, his wife. As the plot unfolds it is apparent that the Ghost of poor dear Chauncey has been laid forever. Thus is brought about the happiness of those involved to the satisfaction of all. Those taking part in the play were: Zib Neff, Betty Lykens, Willard Davis, Mary Io Iohnson, Artl'1uriBrown, Tom Giffin, Ralph Hurley, Patty Meddings, Eleanor Steed, Ruth Lee Truax.
