VVrestling 3, 4, SEHIUR HISTUHU In September of the year 1936, a group of over one hundred individuals entered high school for the first time. It was evident that they were freshmen because of the bewildered look on their faces as they wandered around the halls looking for their classes. They recovered somewhat from this green state long enough to elect the following officers: Prefidem' .............. . ...... Duane Long Vice Prefidefzl ,....... ....... F red Mobley Secreiury ............ ........... M adge Truax T1'eaJ1n'e1' ........ ....... K atherine Kissell Hiftorimz ..................,.......... ...... M ildred Lovrich When this class entered high school the next year as Sophomores, there was a decided decrease in the number of students to those of the former year, but they made up for it by being well represented in all the activities, especially football, basketball, and wrestling. The officers of the Sophomore class were as follows: Prefidefzt ............................................ Duane Long ' Vice Prefidemf ........ .,.... N ancy Schafer Secretary ............ ........... A nn Scott Treafurer ,....... ....... M adge Truax H iytorimz ...................................,.. Mildred Lovrich As juniors, they found that life was not all a bowl of cherries but that there was work to be done. The Seniors must be given a banquet and a prom at the end of the year, so the juniors must slave all year long in order to pay for it. Continued on Page 43 20 i ff 1 1-1 fl WW CIHSS PRUPHEGU ' I had just returned from the unpleasant strain of making reservations on the very popular Queen Ester that was sailing for parts unknown and settled into my chair for a rest and a cool drink. I fell asleep, and as I was sleeping I heard the doorbell ring. I went to the door and there stood a man in the uniform of a taxi driver. He said: Your boat sails in five minutes, ma'm, and I'll drive you. The taxi driver was none other than a member of our Senior class, Frank Jenkins. I sat in front with Frank because I wanted to learn as much about our former classmates as I could from him. Frank told me that he was married to Norma Thompson and they were getting along splendidly in their little bungalow with nothing to interrupt their happiness but a cat and a canary. He told me that just the other night he had been to the famous Broadway Theatre in New York and saw the great tap dancer and singer Marion Maine who was another friend of mine, june Glasow. We reached the dock and I ran up the gangplank and collided with a broad shouldered giant whom I immediately recognized as our football hero and wrestling champion, George Cheroke. When asked why he was on the boat, George replied that he was on his way to Spain to act as the supreme judge at the Olympic Games. He said some of our class of 1940 were to participate in the different divisions in the Games. He informed me that the contestant chosen to represent the U. S. in the women's races was our friend and classmate, Betty J. Campbell. This was so much of a shock that I had to request a glass of water. When the steward arrived he was August Gangola. another member of the class of 1940. When I was somewhat ievived, George continued with his speech. He said that Joe Ladyga was in the tennis matches. He received his start in tennis when he tried to sell a tennis racket in the Senior Play. George also told me that Roger Sammons was supposed to have been in the men's races but at the last minute he had called a holiday and eloped with the screen's favorite juvenile star, Mary Nester. After receiving this information I excused myself and went to my cabin. I was looking through the latest movie magazine when I came upon a paragraph which read: Well, folks, here it is at last! The real name of our Hollywood glamor boy, Taylor Ross, is Fred Mobley. He came from a little town on the Ohio River called Shadyside. He returned to get his childhood sweetheart whom he introduced yesterday as his bride. P. S. She is Mary Jurichnewf' Laying the magazine aside, I' rang for the stewardess. When she arrived, I greeted my old friend, Matilda Namen. She told me that she had recently divorced her husband, Richard Davis, after ten years of happy marriage, because he had refused to kiss her goodbye before leaving for work one morning. I sympathized at the right places in her story, and, bidding her goodbye, I went up to the deck. As I was strolling along the deck I ran into two lovely girls, both in the uniform of a captain. I thought I recognized them so I spoke. They looked up and I saw at once that they were two more members of the 1940 class, Libbie jo Lay and Mary J. Burkhart. They told me that they owned the boat and that they employed all ex-sailors in their crew. They were both acting as captain. The navy surely has continued to run in their blood. j Continued on Page 22 21 Q FY-. viz' 'L?'gg'.q1fJ.i.-fr 1 . -X H15 CLASS PROPHECY-Continued from page 21 When the ship's orchestra came on the platform it was announced as Ida Santavicca and her Royal Accordionsf' I always knew Ida would make a name for herself with that accordion of hers. I went up to see Ida and wish her luck. She told me she might need it because she was going to Italy to marry the new dictator who was another class- mate, john Wick. Since I was anlold friend of the two captains I was invited to sit at the captains' table. When we were seated, Captain Lay proposed a toast to the newlyweds, Felix McFarland and Nancy Schafer. When this task was finished, Captain Burkhart proposed a toast to the ever famous novelist, joe Stora, and his intelligent Mildred Lovrich. I saw no more of my old friends, so I went below to write a letter. The next day we docked at England. I got off the boat because I wanted to see the princess who had abdicated to marry a commoner. When I arrived at their residence I discovered that the butler was Richard Moore. He took me to the room where the princess and her husband were. When I looked at her husband I had to sit down to keep from fainting because he was another member of our class, Bob Lewis. After a pleasant talk I returned to the boat. Captain Lay informed me that the great violinist, Emil Wysocky, was on the boat bound for Germany to see his friend john Zuvella, who was the dictator who took Hitler's place in the hearts of the German people. Sincel had all the time in the world I decided to stop in Spain to see the Olympics. While I was there I went to a bull fight and the matador was none other than Cyril Layne who said he had given up his life of roaming to marry a sweet Spanish senorita and fight bulls for the rest of his life. I told him I hoped all the bulls he fought would be like the one-time famous Ferdinand. After visiting Spain I went to Switzerland where on the mountainside one day I met a Swiss yodeler who happened to be Bill Sedor. He told me that it had always been his ambition to be a Swiss yodeler, so he had come to Switzerland. He told me that if I would come to the skiing contest later in the day I might see the greatest artist who ever put on a pair of skis. Well, I was surprised because the girl on skis was another friend, Susie Cheroke. I talked with Sue for a while, and she told me that Art Petrone and Ann Scott were making a picture in Hollywood. She said. they were taking the places of George Burns and Gracie Allen. From Switzerland I went to Greece, where I found that Greek athlete of our class of 1940, Lewis Figuris. He was the owner of a newspaper which wrote stories in the English language describing the customs and government of Greece, to the outsiders. From Greece I traveled to China, where I found Freda Watters teaching' small Chinese children the correct use of the English language. 'She said that she and her husband, Bill Seeley, were enjoying their missionary work in China. From China I went to India, where I was met by Mahatma Ghandi's successor, who happened to be Frank Campbell. It seems his radical ideas seemed to appeal to the Indian people. Can it be possible? Only one more year now remains until we shall have reached our goal. Upon entering high school, in 1937, with one of the largest classes in the history of our school, we were not as green as Freshmen are supposed to be. We took our school life as a matter of course, and rapidly adjusted ourselves to it. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: Pres., Charles Berry, V. Pres., Dale Keyser, Sec. Hester Campbell, Treas., Betty Pacificog Hist., jim Stonebraker. As the year rolled around, we found ourselves occupying the position of Sophomores. By now we felt like veterans at the game and acted accordingly. Except for an advanced position in the school, our life this year was much the same as last. A com- mittee was chosen to nominate the officers, and the class voted. The result was: Pres., Juanita Cherneyg V. Pres., Betty Pacifico, Sec., Charles Berry, Treas., Eleanor Ladygag Hist., Hester Campbell. We also adopted our class colors, Red and White, and our flower, the Rose. Then with the coming of a new school year, we found ourselves as Juniors. This, we feel, is almost the best year in high school, with all its social activities, namely class parties, the junior Class Play fa huge success, by the wayj, and, best of all, the Primm. 25 i Mr. Spitlor - Juniors theft to ':1+5iW !l ' xi, 710.5 e j U NIOR HISTORY-Continued Mr. Kirkland-Juniors. ,theft to rightl. CLASS PROPHECY--Continued Continued from Page 22 In Egypt, the next stop, I met jim Campbell and his wife, Elaine Forsythe, who were conducting an expedition into the pyramids in search of two famous mummies. I went with them, and imagine how astonished we were to find that the mummies were Elizabeth Dean and Vic'Husser. From Egypt I went to Brazil, where I met jim Farmer who was a wealthy man because he had invented a coffee bean that would produce coffee already flavored with milk. It seems the people of 'South America considered his invention a miracle. While in Brazil I went into a beauty shop to have my hair fixed, and as the owner of the shop came forward I saw that it was Wilda Lewis who had also become wealthy by an invention to straighten hair. After this process, she induced the women to try her special permanents, guaranteed to last a lifetime. From Brazil I traveled to Argentina, where I found a woolen factory owned by Duane Long, Bob Merryman and Mary Pickett. It seems that their factory in the U. S. had failed, so they came to S. A. to begin anew. Mary told me that Dale Campbell and Harold Kirkland had joined the French Foreign Legion to try to forget an unhappy love affair of their youth. From Argentina I decided to go to Cuba, where I met Jennings Davis who was the owner of a large sugar plantation. He asked me if I had heard the new newspaper woman, Agnes Baker, on the radio. I had not heard her, but I told him I wasn't surprised because I always knew Agnes could write. From Cuba I went to Mexico to see some of the old Indian relics and I found that Dante Vazzoli had opened a dancing school to teach the Mexican senoritas to do the famous American dances. From Mexico I again entered the United States. In Florida I went to see a movie, Man or Mouse, that was produced by Harry Wright. It was based on the book written by Helen Kapolka. During my travels one day, I was passing what seemed ton be an old southern plantation but as I drove in I found it was a night club owned by Donald Ward. I also discovered that one of the singing waiters was Chet MacMahon, who nightly painted his face black and dropped to his knees singing Ida amid the thundering applause of the audience. The featured torch singer for the evening was Lillian Sherman. She told me that she was planning to give up her career and marry Thoburn Van Dyne. I journeyed on through the states until I came to Texas, where I met Stanley Stemkowski who had been a cowboy but was now a wealthy oil man. He asked me if I'd heard anything about johnny August. I explained that I had been on a trip. He said that johnny had risen to fame overnight. He was now the middleweight boxing champion of the world, America's number one boy friend, and it was rumored that he had a Hollywood contract. He said that johnny made good because he had two of the best managers the U. S. offered, namely, Paul Vison and Neil Tenley. As I was going back to my hotel in California, I heard someone call my name. I turned and saw Agnes Oswick coming toward me. She informed me that she and Elsie Wells were partners in an insurance agency that was very successful. She told me that Margaret Palmer had married Bill Wood and they were living in Canada. SOPHOMORE HISTORY We entered our Freshman year in 1938. We had a rather large class of 109 pupils. Most of us were kind of green the first month or so but after that everyone knew his way around. Zora Lovrich There was not very much happening in our first year in high school, but we were all looking forward to going on as Sophomores. After our summer vacation we all started back to school as Sophomores. Boy, did we feel dignified! There were 105 Sophomores that started back to school in September. Weall felt that we had reached another rung on the ladder, that is, closer to our Senior year. There was an election of officers about three weeks after we had started back to school. They were: . Acclaimed by many sport writers as the outstanding team of the Ohio Valley this past season, might we say without boasting, that this year's gridders broke all records. With a total of 294 points scored by the .Shadeans and -42 points scored by 10 opponents, we were the highest scoring combination in the district. At this time the writer of this column wishes to give much deserved credit to Johnny August and Bill Sedor, these boys having been placed on every All-Valley selection. Under the very excellent leadership of Capt. George Cheroke, along with the capable assistance of Quarterback joe Stora, Cyril Layne, Stanley Malolepsey and Bob Lewis, Shadyside rose to new and greater heights. lt was August in September, October and November everywhere this year. Also let it be known that Shadyside holds the 1939 championship of the Upper Ohio Valley League. You know, you might call it zi draw in games won anti lost 02491. but you just Cant say the same for sportsmanship, ability to play the grime, and condition. Our boys were the cleanest ball team in the district tournament. 40 ww f'a'5,'w5rgrj 1 A Amir With their physical and mental facilities as well as their organized teamwork, they won such outstanding games as: the nod over Bellaire Q39-251 on our home court, the trouncing we gave Bellaire in the tournament Q39-315 g the win over East Liverpool in the tournament Q38-331. Shadyside was in the semi-finals, but Bridgeport very luckily beat us three points. On the all-tournament team this year, Shadyside was represented by two very good players, Cyril Layne, a guard, and Johnny August, a forward. Incidentally, Johnny has been on this all-tournament team for the last three years. High scoring honors go to Captain August, who this season netted 305 points. Such a feat deserves much recognition. We know that with such fine players as John August, Cyril Layne, Bill Sedor, Jennings Davis and Stanley Malolepszy leaving us, their places will be hard to fill. May we Seniors wish to Coach Ellis and to the future teams of Shadyside High School all the luck in the world. , Continued on Page 85 lunfsmns The 1940 grappling team was perhaps the strongest high school wrestling team in the tri-state area. This team won decisive victories over every opponent in dual meets. The team was led by Captain George Cheroke, 165-lb. state champion of 1939. Three members of the team took the state champion title in their own weight at the state wrestling tournament this year: George Cheroke, 165 lbs.g George Magyar, 155 lbs., joe, Stora, 140 lbs. These boys are superior in their field. Also, special mention goes to Charles Berry, 105 lbs., a third place winner. Although John Hay High School of Cleveland won the state team title by a margin of one point over Shadyside, the same team had previously been defeated in a dual meet at Cleveland by the Shadeans. ' The first four team standings in the 1940 tournament were: Cleveland John Hay 21, Shadyside 20, Cleveland Garfield 14, Cleveland West Tech 13. Shadyside was awarded runner-up. Shadyside was represented in the Clinic Band by Nan Schafer, Norma Hays, Eleanor Ankenbrand, Marjorie jones and Tom Truax. The band participated in the district contest at Muskingum College and made a very good showing. Several members also took part in the solo and ensemble contest. On April 20 we entered the State Contest at Columbus, in spite of the flood, and won a first place in the Class BB Division. The new uniforms were obtained for the Band by the Band Mothers. BOYS GLEE CLUB This fall a boys glee club was formed for the purpose of giving all the boys interested, a chance to sing lively and harmonious songs. So far twenty boys have joined and as members have participated in public appearances--once in assembly and will appear once in the choral concert in March. The boys have enjoyed their bi- weekly sessions under Mr. Cady's direction and only hope for more husky male singers to join them another year. GIRLS GLEE CLUB Forty-five members, good and true, belong to our Shadyside Girls Glee Club. They have appeared twice so far this year-once for assembly and once on the Thanksgiving program. They sang once in the combined music concert, in the last of March, and also sang over radio station WWVA on March 17. The club has done some very nice work on their attractive numbers and are looking forward to further success. MIXED CHORUS The pick of the Girls and Boys Glee Clubs was selected by Mr. Cady to form this organization, one of the first of its kind in the county. The chorus was first presented to the public in the Xmas Assembly and also on the broadcast of special Xmas music to the town. Our chorus entered the District Music Competition Festival at Muskingum College and sang over radio station WWVA on March 17 along with the Girls Glee Club. It also sang at the musical concert held in the audi- torium at the end of March and again at the Baccalaureate services in May. The choir's selections have been of a consistently high grade of music and the standard of performance is constantly improving since its start on the first month of the school year. The group has met three times weekly and have greatly enjoyed their sessions of hard work and melodious practice under the baton of their leader, Mr. Cady. 47 lizlelc liim'--Fmnk Czlllmlu-ll. Its purpose is to get the girls interested in sports, to help them to understand the popular games, to make them healthy physically, and mentally alert, to show good sportsmanship, and, above all, to teach various games to the girls themselves. The programs are arranged in order to enlighten the knowledge of the girls in various kinds and types in the sports world. Most of the activities in which the girls participate to earn their points are dancing, ping pong, bowling, roller skating, hiking, bicycling, club practices, etc. Those girls who earn many points fusually higher than the restj receive a merit, such as pins or letters. At the end of the year the girls plan a Play Day, to which girls of surrounding schools are invited, and enjoy games with Shadyside girls. Officers elected were: Pres., Bob Lewis, Vice Pres., Duane Long, Sec., Harold Kirkland, Treas., Bill Maloney, Advisor Mr. Marshall. Our first act was to raise money by selling scorecards at all home football games. These were very fine programs. They contained pictures of players and interesting articles. From the selling of these cards and the ads in the cards, the Hi-Y realized a neat sum. At Christmas time we decorated two trees in front of the school building and distributed several baskets for the needy. We also bought a motion picture screen for the second floor study hall. Then came our crowning achievement. We purchased an announcement system for the high school. A loud speaker was installed in every room and is controlled from a central broadcasting in Mr. Dorff's office. I.ater in the year we rented a sound full- length motion picture and showed it to the entire student body. During the year our Advisor, Mr. Marshall, and our president attended the intra club council meetings at Wheeling. From these council meetings we gathered much material for our club. On February 26, l9fl0, we had our annual dance. Charles Donovan's orchestra from Wheeling furnished the music. The Hi-Y year for 1939-'40 has been a highly successful one. 55 PING l'0Nli l'l.l li llzu-li rim: lla-ft, to liightj Earl Hallam, llolm Vope-lzlliil, t'l1m'l1-s St-lirmmn. lluls l'i-I1-rs, llzili- liuysi-r, Ulu-sim-I' M1'lXlz1liun. .lim llzilli-11, Yin-tor llussur, .luck l l'2llllX. Betty Campbell, On Friday, March 15, 1940, the Senior Class presented a three act comedy entitled Wlitit a Life! It was the story of Henry Aldrich, problem child of Central High School, who was a cross between Penrod and Peck's Bad Boy. Wlien Henry was not lying, he was fighting, cribbing, collecting old shoes, drawing caricatures of his teachers, talking in study periods, flunking exams. Henry is even accused of stealing all the band instruments. The play was under the direction of Miss Marie Wells, and the cast included: Henry Aldrich, joe Ladygag Barbara Pearson, Mary Jurichney, Mr. Nelson, Bob Lynskeyg Miss Shea, Lillian Sherman, Mr. Bradley, Bob Lewis, George Bigelow, .limmy Campbell, Mr. Patterson, Vic Husserg Miss Wlieeler, Nancy Schafer, Miss Eggleston, Betty Campbell, Miss Pike, Helen Kapolka, Mr. Vecchitto, jim Farmer, Miss johnson, Eileen McCluskey, Gertie, Evelyn Boston, Bill, Harold Kirkland, Mrs. Aldrich, Madge Truax, Mr. Ferguson, Duane Long, Mary, Matilda Namen, Students, Agnes Baker, Mildred Lovrich, Margaret McLaughlin, joe Stora, Chester McMahon. There followed many dances and skating parties sponsored by this ambitious class. Finally came the prom, when all the juniors dressed up in their best bib and tucker and trudged off to the prom to dance to the music of a real, live orchestra. This night holds many memories dear and sacred to the hearts of the juniors, and they decided that this one night was worth all their efforts because next year they would be given the same honors. This is the first year that the class officers had any important work to do, so they were chosen as follows: Preridenl .................. .......... A nn Scott Vive Prerident ....,.... .............. B ob Lewis Secrelary ............... ....... N ancy Schafer Trearwer ........... ......... B etty Campbell Hzrtorzmz .................................,.... Mildred Lovrich Time marches on-it is the following year. Surely these dignified students can't be those same green kidsl' that entered high school back in '36! They are, but they soon lost their dignified manner when they realized that they would soon leave school and that, after all, they had had a great deal of fun in high school. There were days when everyone was nervous because he had to have his picture taken and then disappointments when the proofs came and he finds that he doesn't look like Gable after all. There were also days of picking the class rings, and the proud flashing of jewelry when they came. What a Life, the class play given by the Seniors, was a hit performance. As the end of the year approached, the class of '40 realized that they were looking forward to commencement and Baccalaureate with regret, because the old schoolhouse wasnlt so bad after all. But Baccalaureate came and so did Commencement, so we hope that we have added something to the history of Shadyside High School, something that they will always remember, something that will make the future students say: That was the class of 1940. The addresses and other information are as complete as possible, since the response to our questionnaire was not as good as we expected. Many of the addresses are hearsay and doubtless many are wrong. However, we make no apologies as such information is often difficult to obtain and many times inaccurate. We would welcome criticisms and corrections as we realize the growing importance of an ever- expanding Alumni group and its value to our High School. Perhaps this endeavor will not have been in vain but will serve as a liason between our Alumni and Shadyside High School. We wish to acknowledge the generous response of those who did return the questionnaires and also tender our thanks for your orders for a Shadean that you have helped to make possible. We hope the 1940 Shadean meets with your approval, and if you get a few hours of pleasure from its pages we will feel amply repaid. The Shadean Staff, 1940. They told me that Bob Shroeder, that young Senator from Idaho, had obtained their positions for them. I boarded a train for New York. As I sat down I noticed that all the people were staring at the woman who had just boarded the train. I recognized her at once as my friend, Mary Vucelich. I asked her why everyone was staring at her, and she said that maybe it was because the train was owned by Ethel Ambler and herself. When I arrived in New York I found that a great musical comedy called Every- body Swing was playing, and Madge Truax and Bob Lynsky had the leads. After seeing the musical I fell asleep while the music was playing and was awakened by a light tap on my shoulder. I realized that all my travels and adventures had been a dream. EVELYN BOSTON. It was at this time that each and every player on the field proved himself to be a man. Shadyside was nosed out, 12-7. Powhatan, home, September 22-On our home ground in the lights, Shadyside turned the tables on a newly coached Indian aggregation, the score being Shadyside 18, Powhatan 0. Mingo, away, September 29-In a driving rain and drizzle, the Shadeans over- powered the Mingo eleven by a score of 34-12. Toronto, home-The Red Knights of Toronto invaded Shadyside. Again Shady- side proved themselves to be great ball players and turned back Toronto 28-6. Tiltonville, away-Shadyside traveled up the river and defeated Tiltonville 40-0. Incidentally the score was the same margin that Bellaire had beaten them the previous Saturda . Adlena, away-Avenging our defeat last year, Coach Ellis used his extra squad and trounced Adena 54-0. St. Clairsville, away-This time Shadyside was supposed to be up against a really tough team, but when the final whistle sounded, Shadyside was 'way out in front, 47-O. Linsly, home-Shadyside played host to a very fine team. This game proved to be a very good game, though the score does not indicate it. Shadyside defeated the Cadets, 29-6. Wheeling Central, home-The Maroons of Central came to Shadyside with expectations of giving us a good beating, but in the face of a drizzling downpour, Captain Cheroke and his boys held their own to a score of 21-6.
