The undergraduates compose a minor part of all the campus groups, but from this minority the future leaders of the clubs are chosen. The importance of the H11I'1ClC1'gI'2lClSH is recognized by the school not only in the academic pro- gram but also in the governing body. In addition to the class officers of every form, certain members of the fifth form are elected to serve on the student council. VVilliam Hackney, Patil Steele, and Williarn Carpenter are the members serving on this year's student council. The members of the fifth form also traditionally sponsor the annual Commencement Dance. The Commencement Dance is the largest of the school dances and is given in honor of the seniors. Last yearls orchestra for the Commencement Dance was Herby Kay. A committee, headed by Bill Connelly and Bob Gow, chose this orchestra for the 1940 dance. Walter' Price lead the decoration of the gymnasium. Each member of the fifth form contributes a sum of money to guarantee the cost of the dance. This year's committee of four, Bill Hackney, Patil Steele, Bud McGrath, and Stu Swensson, have chosen johnny Messner. The preparations for this year's dance were carried out similarly to those of last year's. The younger boys who make up the non-varsity teams, are being trained for the future positions on the varsity. These lower formers support the varsity Whole-heartedly, and by their admiration, become the morale of the teams. The members of the lower forms who are not old enough to join the A Cappella choir become members of the Glee Club. 'The Glee Club trains the boys for their future membership in the A Cappella choir, because it is from this group that the candidates are chosen. The enthusiastic support of the undergraduates prevails in all the organizations so that when those boys become seniors they are thoroughly capable of fulfilling their position in the school. , ,,,. In the center of a small group of people, huddled together at the door of a pullman car, a big time politician was bidding some travelers bood-by. Bucky Heald, iron-hat of the 5th Warcl, was this black cigar-smoking political boss. As he bade our train farewell we started our sojourn to Hollywood. Wliile on the spacious train we were entertained by the music of Guy Hamilton and his orchestra, featuring, Bill Beat me Daddy Smith and George Bartholomew, with the vocal refrain by, The Songbird of Forbes Streetf' Walter Price. Among those who attempted to dance to the music were such Terpsichoreans as, George VV est, Jim 'W ard, and Alvin Rogal. As our train pulled into Indianapolis we saw Dick Goldsborough and his Hell Drivers , starring Elliott Swartz. Close behind these men of speed was George Wiclt madly attempting to get a picture for The Hawkins Daily Dribble. Also following was Roland Harrison driving his Chrysler hearse. At ou.r next stop, Chicago, we spent the hour between trains in a theater. On the stage the har- monizing of the Canonsburg gruesome twosome, Bob and Ross Hume, was fol- lowed by a presentation of The Russian Ballet, headed by Carl Twinkle Toes Roemer, and .lim HMandrake Lawther. The train then sped forward to Hollywood where we were welcomed by such lilrn stars as, jim Romeo Jopson, King McLaurin, 'lTyrone Tom McIntire, and those swashbuckling heros, Ted Bennett and Allen Clark Gable Somers. Having departed from the station at Hollywood we strolled along Hollywood Boulevard. VV'e soon saw a sign, which blazed Turner's Escort Service , with such notable assistants as, Penn Grifhn, Steve Reuter, Bill Burnett, and Chuck McFee1y. Another sign above this announced, Buddy Braun's Body Builders. In this muscle bound organization were such modern Hercules as Bill Miller, Sam Marshall, and Bill Nathan. ' Our eyes were next attracted to an Austin drawing up to the curb, driven by Stretch', Wliite. Out of this car stepped that great producer and movie magnate, Harry Brindle, Bob Morton, his business manager, and his personal valet, Pete Glick. They all entered the offices of Paterson and Rucker, Interior Decorators. Our party then visited a movie lot where we saw Bob Gow petting his dog, Duchess, all 157 pounds, with a'ten foot pole. A group of movie stars crossed our path headed by the famous Russian director john Boris Charleski Succop. The lot cafeteria was under the direction of the French chef, jim Burke, as we were told by Bob Hanna. As we drew near a movie set our party was horrified by jack Frankinstein Fisher. The victim of his assault was Bud 'tI?.ric Faintheart Scott. We also saw Bob Milligan reading Shakespeare on bended knee while Ray Hunt, clad in a leopard skin, and Pat Janssen listened attentively. When we inquired why almost all the class of '41 were in Hollywood, Kenny Longuecker told us that Logan Bailey, the great archaeologist, had, with the aid of Stu McIntyre, Paul Davidson, and Jack Glasgow, discovered gold, while dig- ging for the remains of an old Indian Toby. These members had together with Bill Connelly, the oil king, opened the movie studio. As we glanced through the Dismukes Timesu on the way to the Hollywood airport, we noticed that F. D. R. 111 had appointed Malcolm Einstein to his cabinet as ambassador to The Bronx. Einstein chose Diamond, Lichtenstul, and Glosser, three famous lawyers, to aid him in this important post. XV e also noticed that Capt. Fulton had sailed around the world in record time. On the sport page, Dave Marshall is still said to be a hold out on the Pirate roster. John 1V1arburger and George Hanson are said to have been appointed members of the Pittsburgh Street Cleaning Association, both receiving honorary positions. The small group of Pittsburghers now boarded an airplane of the Gilmore Line. Our pilot, Bill Vifhigham, guided the plane off the ground safely despite the fears of George Stewart. On the plane returning to VVashington were G-men Ollie Einstein and John Lanahan. They had just captured Baby Sandy, notorious for- eign spy. Our trip ended as we glided through the clear Pittsburgh air to a landing. Class F avorities Beverage .... Magazine. . . Publication. . Orchestra. . . H e ro .... Actress .... .... Song.... Before becoming an actual mem- ber, a boy must go through a pledgeship period ranging between six and ten weeks, after which he receives the formal initiation, and is accepted into the club. Meet- ings are held the first Sunday of every month at the home of a member, and the year is terminated with a large banquet and a formal dance. Cum Laude Society Shady Side has been a member of the National Cum Laude Society, an or- ganization similar to the national college honorary society Phi Beta Kappa, since 1929. Each year the twenty per cent of the members of the graduating class who rank highest in scholarship are elected to the Society. Candidates must have at least two years accredited work in Shady Side, and their average for these junior and Senior years must be above 80 per cent to quality for membership. Members to this Society are chosen twice a year, once at the end of the first semester, and once at the end of the second semester. MEMBERS A. Roberts Dismukes, Ir. Raymond F. Hunt Robert C. VVard, was composed of some 35 voices divided into four sections, first and second tenors, and first and second basses. The Glee Club, which this year took two extended trips, one to Wasliiiigtoii, D. C., and one to Miami Beach, Florida in addition to many shorter jaunts, had as section leaders, 'William Miller, VV alter Price, George Stewart, and VVilliam Vlfhigham. The main point of the 1941 program, which is completed this Class Day, was the SOOO mile Southern tour which took fifteen days to complete. Last March 28, 35 bedraggled, sun-peeling songsters wearily staggered out of their cars, carrying an unsightly load of suitcases, bags of oranges, and drag- ging behind them a few snapping alligators. Despite the chorus of bloody oaths and heart-rending sobs over lost coats, hats, women, and bottle openers, we ftnally gathered up the following tale of high adventure. After reeling OH an uneventful 400 mile journey, the Glee Club, under Gen- eral Wa1'd, laid seige to the William Byrd Hotel in Richmond, Va. Our happy little songsters, seated upon 34 suitcases, one steamer trunk, and a shoe-box, while waiting for the room list, amused themselves with itching powder, sneezing powder, and water guns. The undeclared war was hnally broken up by the arrival of Mr. Howard with the much awaited room-list. Led by an aenemic bell-hop staggering under this load, our warblers hled into the VVilliam Byrd Barracks. Passing pedestrians noticed a sudden increase in blaring portable radios, convertibles, and water bombs, plummeting down upon the unsuspecting citizenry from the windows of the hotel. After a night of practically no sleep, our heroes arose ready to face the world .... Now, on to Miami. After broadcasts in Columbia, Charleston, Savannah., and jacksonville, the tired caravan came to a halt before the welcome portals of the Eden Hotel in Miami. Sundown usually found at least a half of the Glee Club at the Flagler Dog Track, where they would be waiting tensely for the familiar cry, There goes Rusty! and watching their two dollars on the nose trot gamely to the hnish line in hfth or sixth place. The first official concert was over Miami's VV.l.O.D. from whence they returned to the Marine Terrace Hotel where they successfully appeared before the occupants of the hotel. Later that same evening, our now bronzed boys made their way to the Allapattah Temple, in which they took part in the Sunday evening service. Their short stay in Miami, the Southern pleasure capital, was brought to a close when the Glee Clubbers, far from enthusiastically climbed into their cars and began their long trek homeward. After four days of Northward travelling, they hnally arrived back in Pittsburgh, thus completing the 3000-mile tour. It may seem to you that life in the A Cappella is all play and no work, how- ever, the singers spent many hours in individual rehearsals learning their parts, after which they took many more combined sessions in which to correct their harmony and gain the perfection necessary for radio work. This year's program was made up of such favorites as: Stars of the Summer Night, f'Proudly as the Eagle, the perennial Prayer of Thanksgiving, and Findlandia. In addition to the main group of singers, there was a saxophone quartet, which specialized in current numbers, and Leader-Soloist james VVard, who was featured in 'fSwing Low, I Love Life, and I Hear a Brown Bird Singing. Final Score : 40-O Traveling to University School at Cleveland, on Oct. 19, the Blue and Gold won an exciting battle in a driving snow storm, 7-O. Because Davey Marshall had fractured his leg in scrim- mage, Coach LaRue was forced to place Long- necker in the injured halfback's position, and to place Rogal at end. The only score of the game came early in the lirst quarter. After Quay had caught a beautiful pass thrown by Longnecker, Glick plunged over the goal. Quay kicked the placement, and this close contest ended with Shady Side the winner. Final Score: 7-O By overwhelming VVestern Reserve Acad- emy, 46-7, on Oct. 26, the Indians practically clinched the championship. Glick scored from the 2 yard line in the hrst quarter, Longnecker carried the ball across the goal twice in the second quarter, and Quay converted each time. In the second half touchdowns were made by Connelly and Dale Armstrong, who scored three times. Roemer, a guard, strengthened the team's defense by breaking up several of the visitor's plays. Final Score: 46-7 Witliotit realizing that they were playing their last game of the season, on Nov. 1 the Blue and Gold gridders defeated Shaler High School, 13-O, on a cold, rainy day. Glick made the hrst tally in the second period by carrying the ball over from the 2 yard line, ending a 64 yard drive. Near the close of the fourth quarter Longnecker dashed 32 yards to score. Glick plunged over the goal for the extra point. Final Score: 13-O Because one of their teammates had been seriously injured in a previous game, the Nichols eleven forfeited their match with the Indians to Shady Side. Together with the Blue and Gold's three league victories, this forfeit gave the Inter-State League Championship to the Indians. The Shady Side eleven remained undefeated and untied in six games, scored 154 points to their opponents' 14, and won the Inter-State Preparatory School League Championship. The prospects for the 1941 season look very bright with Lettermen Bryan Black, Dale Armstrong, Ed Crump, and VVally Kappel re- turning, and with Reserves George Gilmore, Andy Rowan, Ed Weil, and Joe Armstrong coming back. Also several good players from the Junior Varsity will probably graduate to next year's Varsity. The 1941 football team will be captained by F. Bryan Black, '42.
