Sailing Through Time TOWER 1984 Shades Valley High School 104 Hermosa Drive Birmingham. Alabama 35209 Volume 35 Editor: Kim Moore Assistant Editor: Andrea Blount Business Editor: Sara Faucette Sponsor: Melinda Howton As we soil through our lives, it is comforting to reflect on the shore from which we came. Shr skims across the surface of the water, effortlessly tacking back and forth, gliding up to the dock where we wait expectantly. We board, anticipating the ex-|hilaniliun which u associated with the sport of sailing Leaving the dock and tsnora behind u . we catch the wind in billowing suils and race along, seeming mot to touch the water at all. All our dreams are instantly fulfilled, but already we [an® headed back for the dock — so quickly the trip Is almost over. So soon we [haveeoino to the point of realization that a certain part of our human experience U.s completed, and it is time to graduate to new adventure dnd new exjieriences ‘but we cuu never forget the trip that we look, or the things we have learned, or |the ways we have grown aboard our boat, the Maturity by Ron Comoglio “Sailing Thr ugh Time” ■mifr I'v.f. u«« .Muniuiini ixrr to urr • c u n)TRh:irr nmroM iMft Qm tn i« bKfuin 4X.I . Wlll«n When the cheering’s over, and the crowd has gone.. vds ma • i g. the bedlam A peaceful scene surrounds ma as I gaze across the deserted stadium — a somewhat different setting to contrast the bemam of football games on Friday nights As 1 recall the noise of the crowd, the bands playing, and tho tension in the air. I realize that it has all come to a holt. Yet the memories will never die — priceless memories, such as the night we playod Mountain Brook. I can still visualize the crowd reaction as we scored in the closing seconds It was truly a night to remember As I look back at the season. I also feel a strong sense of accomplishment. Not |ust anyone could do what we have done. One practice in particular stands out in my mind The coaches had pushed us to our limit, arid 1 remember that prior to each play as I rested on my knee . It was necessary to put my hands on the ground to keep from falling on my face These memories are not tho most pleasant; nevertheless, they ore included. Of course, tho long practices that produced blood and sweat will not be missed, yet will I compete with the group of guys who mean so much to me — a group through so much together Memories are all that remain now They are life as In other' lives, and certainly they will be cherished as we ling through time by David Sturdivant urr Mot n itn um n««. w« n.« w t m worn v«ww h- - m «, Mm nn m ubt u m4 m v..« imi nu.m m u Tt.n CmJI Mm MM.MI PAI-.r Tttf urr J . We were bo scared of the giant lady who was called teacher There were so many kids we didn’t know, and we thought we d be yelled at if we asked where the bathroom was Then we grew older, and school became less frightening Our teachers took on more human-like qualities It seemed as if they had changed, and we had. too. We were no longer terrified of them and we learned we could talk to them. Far many of us. there is at least one sjiecial teacher we remember. We realize that teachers really do cure about us as individuals and want us to learn. They know our capabilities and try to help tw reach our potential. Often, they teach without thanks, but they never give upon us By Andrea Blount “Sometimes the halls are so lonely, but sometimes. . The hull is empty now. The thud of incessant footsteps no longer encircles me. nor do the thronging moss of fellow students further speed me on my path. All of the accumulated noise and rumblings we've come to know itre as nothing now Silence hangs heavy in this dim and lonely corridor. This hall is alone and lonely, and so am I. The hall — It is alone, but soon 1 know she is never truly lonely. Poised in anticipation she awaits the footsteps of tomorrow to echo in her dimly lighted charnborways. Perhaps it is lonely only for me. who feels my time to leave has come. It is my time to venture onward and seek my place elsewhere. As for the hall, she now is noble in her rest and patient in her contemplation of tomorrow. She does not seek to know the future, only play a part in its construction This hall may be empty, but she, forever the optimist, is never lonely. Her task awaits her on the morrow. These years have been some of the best of our lives, but now we must leave them behind and venture with anxious hearts to the new experiences that life holds. To many, graduation is an ending, but graduation is the beginning of the rest of our lives. Whether we continue our schooling or go directly to the working world, the next few years will establish a base for a successful future. In the coming years, many of us will face the responsibilities of marriage and starting our own families Perhaps one day we will be sending our own children to Shades Valley, and we will realize what n difference Shades Valley has made in our lives. by Sara Foucette ‘i Won’! She tends us. her garden, with gentle, caring words, she reapeth what she sows. How like unto a rose. We. her unclaimed children, who benefit by her hand. Oh what a friend to God and mun. She, who works the land. Wo claim her as our steadfast mentor. She is our love, our savior, while others in this world destroy, she is a lone creator. Iiy Katherine Patter Occasionally students will encounter a special type of teacher — one who Is so enthusiastic about the subject that it spreads to her pupils, making them want to learn. Mrs. Frye is one who. without question, fits this description perfectly. She is a teacher who puts much emphasis on hard work, but, at the same time, she cares for individuals inside the students The Tower staff wishes to show its appreciation by dedicating the 19H3-84 Tower to Mrs Linda Frye. This token of appreciation is hardly enough to repay her for her influence both scholusticallv as well as personally. For this we are grateful. As we take our place in life, she will never he forgotten. by David Sturdivant 20 VICE-PRINCIPALS iamesa.turner Miles College. Morehouse. Alabama Stale University A.B., M.A.. A.A. One of the most exciting parts is the Homecoming date. The boy buys a mum a school (it's usually wilted by the time his date receives it), both of them get really dressed up (they'd rather be in jeans), and then they go to dinner and the game. The problem with Homecoming this year was that dates were rare. Most everyone went with groups of friends. The poor SGA had a tough time with mum sales, but by the last day. things had picked up. The lucky minority who had dates helped to keep up a fun Homecoming tradition. As I reflect on this year, many things come to mind. The most important image is that of the people at Valley. The students at Valley are all very unique, yet we have one thing in common — pride in our school. 1 feel good knowing that I've had the opportunity to meet all the different types of people that attend Shades Valley. Many people go through life without ever knowing anyone but the people living closest to them. I've met people from all over the Birmingham area and huve made some very important, lasting friendships. Years from now when I turn through the pages of this book. 1 will remember the people who made this school special. 1 will always treasure this part of my life. by Kim Moore “Sometimes it's tough being the youngest.” Although it was exciting starling to high school, the first day wasn't so great. There were many embarrassing moments. Remember when we walked into the wrong classroom, or when we couldn't find the bathroom? We also had some good experiences. Remember our first pep rally? When we were in junior high, we were the oldest and had all the “authority. It was rough going back to being the youngest. Sophomores had the excitement of experiencing their first year of high school, and the seniors had the anticipation of graduation. The junior year was definitely a trying one. but by no means was it dull The student in the middle had a sense of security There was the advantage of having an edge over the sophomores. There was also the advantage of getting helpful hints from the seniors. — ■ All in all, the good points outweighed the bad. but the best thing about “Juniors Survived the in-between Stage.” l eing a junior was that we were one yeor closer to graduation. by Laurie Mitchel ■ LEFT PAGE TOP LETT Kip Brannon. Being a senior meant many different things. It was exciting to be the leaders of the school and the examples to the underclassmen. It was thrilling (and a little scary) to know that new adventures would soon be explored. In retrospect, the year was the final fling before leaving childhood and stepping into adulthood. It was the last year before taking total responsibility for our actions. It was a year of fun and freedom. It was the year we could envision our futures with youthful idealism before entering the prac- -ticalitiesof life. by Natalie Williams • All provisions are packed and the boat is prepared for the long journey ahead. The waiting is finally over — the time has come. As the first rays of light pierce the darkness, the sail is hoisted and the anchor is drawn up. We are on our own. The dock is merely a speck behind us. We are in control. The wind picks up and fills the sails. The ocean glitters and sparkles as the sun reaches its-zenith. Free. Free to go wherever the winds will take us. Able to take on any challenge that faces us. Sailing. Moving forever toward the horizon. Trying to capture a dream. by Kim Thees
