Text from Pages 1 - 264 of the 1983 volume:

Dear Shades Valley, we do love thee. Give thee honor, trust, and praise. And for thee our spirits heighten. While our loyalty we raise Onward Valley, to more glory. We are wiihithee all the way. Please bestow thy richest blessing. Over us throughout our day. TOWER 1983 SHADES VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL 104 Hermosa Drive Birmingham. Alabama 35209 Volume 34 Editor: Jennifer Kunze Assistant Editor. Lisa Ellis Business Manager: Veta Lorino Sponsor: Melinda Howton The Shades Valley Mounties definitely had the beat In 1983. The screaming of the crowd, Go Valley ; the dancing to Let it Whip . The Gigolo , and the drum feature. Wipe Out ; the claiming of the big spirit stick; and the swaying to the Alma Mater made up some of the best pep rallies that Shades Valley Mounties have ever seen. In addition to the Punk” rally and M'A'S'H rally, the inevitable Prep rally added to the excitement of our big win over Mountain Brook. Mike Hogewood of Channel 6 said that if he could give a trophy for the best pep rally, Shades Valley would walk away wtth It. How 'bout them Mounties! “Little ditty 'bout Jack and Diane Two American kids growing up In the heartland. There 1$ no such thing as traditional dating” at Shades Valley. In 1983 no one was hung up on couple dating on weekends. A date was when everybody “hung out together The Mounties have a reputation of being a family and staying together. We have dates on Homecoming and other special occasions which makes dating very special to us. Almost anywhere you look you'll see a Valley couple holding hands, leaning against lockers, and as any Mountie can tell you. osculation Isn't dead yet “Hold on to sixteen for as long as you can. Some of us prefer football over basketball, others mini-skirts over Levi’s, and still others prefer punk over country. But whether we are for Auburn or Alabama, we all agree that When you say Shades Valley. You’ve said it all. OPENING 7 OPENING 8 Working for the Weekend “They wonder how we do It, There's just one, simple rule. We're just cool — The Time The “Mountie weekend officially begins after first period on Fridays. The madness of pep rallies is just the beginning, We rush home after school to struggle out of our pep rally attire and into Levi’s, button-down shirts, and Nikes. After the football games, we raid Mr. Gatti’s to get a big screen look at those mighty Mounties and the unlucky opponent. With temperatures in the 40's, many couples were given an excuse to snuggle up and watch as Shades Valley shut out Robert E. Lee 14-0. Many girls were dressed in wool skirts and blazers adorned with their Homecoming mums. Alongside the girls, their dates were dressed in wool and tweed blazers or the traditional suit After the game, many couples dined at Darryl’s, the newest restaurant In Birmingham. Other couples were seen standing in line to get in Baby Doe's. Michaels. Fifth Quarter, and other fine restaurants Depending on the time, some couples decided to catch the late movie while others barely made it to Star Lake to watch the last of the “submarine races. In all Homecoming was a great sue cess, and it was a night worth remembering. 13 We do not remember days We remember moments. This was the year for memories at Shades Valley We all have special memories about our victories over West End. Mountain Brook, and Robert E Lee. Who can forget the missing spirit stick, the debut of the Jazz Show Choir, the 95 rock disc jockey at our pep rally, and the prep team of the week Laughing, sighing, loving, and crying all make up times that we can never forget Anyone who comes to Shades Valley will see the Mounties doing what we do best — making memories OPENING 14 Since 1945 each individual entering these halls has questioned the mirage of the future. Here a sort of magic reaches out to draw him into the ultimate pur pose of Shades Valley He learns that no man is an island, entire of itself, but that every man ts a part of the main For the meaning Shades Valley gives to our lives and the emotions spent through these uncertain years when we leave, we do so with a smile and yet a tear.. . KrawOmw Valley Singers Once again the Valley Singers has proven to be an excellent group of students at Shades Valley who has shown talent and dedication It is an honor and a big responsibility to be a part of the Valley Singers. Concert Choir There is much more to the Concert Choir than singing. We have to sing and dance at the same time which can be totally aggravating if both your feet think they're the right foot. There’s also moving the piano and hauling Christmas trees. HOT ROW Cyatfea CWm. Tmy UWy. AW KnnH 1.1 4 Dw rv. Rut F . SECOND ROW Wf. Kay Dm . P.W. CW, lURr. to —. whv VV. PmM Cm Vwj. jam. Ww —. What we have is what we at Shades Valley would call one of our quieter pep rallies! Shades Valley is known by all the schools for its pep rallies which can be heard every Friday morning during football season. Nothing can match the feeling of excitement and that “Mountie spirit during one of our pep rallies! Mrs. Harrell's Algebra II, and Mrs. Frye's English, the entire junior class was seen wandering the halls with bewildered looks on our faces. From PHIL’S FOOD MART “More Than a Convenience Store” Friendship is a Golden Chain, The links are friends so dear. And like a rare and precious jewel, It’s treasured more each year... It’s clasped together firmly. With a love that's deep and true. And it's rich with happy memories, And fond recollections, too... Time can't destroy its beauty, For, as long as memory lives, Years can't erase the pleasure, That the joy of friendship gives ... For friendship is a priceless gift. That can't be bought or sold. But to have an understanding friend. Is worth far more than gold ... And the Golden Chain of Friendship, Is a strong and blessed tie, Binding kindred hearts together, As the years go passing by.
