By LEE DAVIS James Ix e Nelson was my friend. And I wasn't alone Jimmy Nelson had many, many friends, mainly because he was such a good friend himself. We lost Jimmy in a tragic accident last Tuesday, but only In the sense that we’ll never see him in this world again. His personal qualities, his love and concent for his friends. hl6 excellence In the classroom and on the athletic field, and his leadership everywhere will remain with us as surely as If he were still here They will serve as his monument long after others have faded The senior Index of Shades Valley High School's 1980 yearbook lists some of his school accomplishments: Captain and Most Valuable Player of the football team, third baseman for the baseball team. Mr. Shades Valley. Most Likely to Succeed. Valedictorian. National Honor Society. Outstanding Math Student, and on and on His record In two years at the University of Alabama was much the same: honor student, residence counselor, etc But as impressive as all that is. a cold, black and athlete, friend white resume cannot alone do Jimmy Justice, or fully say why he was so loved Head what some who knew him best say: •'Jimmy was one of my favorites.'' says his football coach at Valley. Robert Higginbotham. He was an outstanding student and football player, but more important, he was an outstanding person Not many of his calibre come down the road We lost someone special when we lost Jimmy. Higginbotham remembers that Jimmy was very shy as a sophomore. but by his senior year, had developed an outgoing per sonnlity. One of the Joys of coaching is see Ing a guy mature as he did. Jimmy's best football performance may have come during his senior season of 1979. in a 27-24 Mounllc loss to arch-rival Vestavia Hills. Playing linebacker. Jimmy was In on virtually every tackle his team made that evening It was one of the finest performances I've ever seen. says Higginbotham. He made practically every tackle. He played offense and fielded punts, too Jimmy wasn't blessed with a whole lot of ability, but he was a great player for us. Todd Fowler played football and baseball with Jimmy at Valley, and will long remember his leadership talents and no-quit attitude If you could pattern yourself after him. you’d not only be a leader in sports but in Ihe school.” says Fowler You could always count on him to be out front in everything He was definitely a quality person On a one to 10 scale, he had to get a 10 for using what Cod had given him Danny Browning, another ex-baseball teammate, describes Jimmy as like a brother. I know that’s a cliche, but it’s true. Charlotte Fowler was Jimmy’s classmate, not only at Shades Valley but also at the University. Jimmy was the kind of person who made you feel good. she says. He was Just the type you like to be around He did so many things for me. 1 can’t name them all ” I wasn't as lucky as Conch Higginbotham and Todd and Danny and Charlotte. I didn’t get to know Jtmmy well until late In his senior year, when the Valley baseball team came within one game of the state cham plonshtp But from our first meeting. I was impressed with his poise courtesy and maturity. A little later after Valley had lost that decisive final game to Davidson of Mobile. I remember having a long conversation with him Naturally he was disappointed about losing, but the experiences he had shared with his teammates meant far more to him than the outcome of any single game I’ll never forget the way we never quit. he told me. This team stayed together all year. ThatTI be what I’ll always remember.' And that's whul we'll remember about Jimmy. Always putting others first, htmsetf last Always caring, always helping, always loving. As Browning puts it. those of us who knew him know what he was Those who didn’t, don’t know what they missed ” It they didn’t know Jtmmy Nelson, they missed a lot 3 1405 04679 8496 SOUTHERN HISTORY DEPARTMENT BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY 2100 PARK PLACE BIRMINGHAM.
