To Meet Student Interest Encompassing a unique range of courses, the Math Department is unified by the idea of providing understanding and literacy in a universal language. From basic fundamentals of Algebra to the complex level of Advance Placement Mathematics, Shades Valley's teachers endeavor to develop within the student the methods of precise and logical thinking. Although each course is complete in itself, most are also college preparatory. In view of the constantly expanding need for college math, a new pre-Calculus Math V course was added to the curriculum this year. The Math Department realizes that one of the basic criterions of math is accuracy —thus, at Valley, accuracy is a demanding standard as well as a challenge. Science Prompts Discovery SARAH STRINGFELLOW U. of Gct.-gia, B.S Chemistry JUDY MILLER Shorter College, B.A. Biology Lab experiments require accuracy in technique and observation. 28 Biology, Chemistry, Physics-through these courses the Science Department introduces the student to the field of experimentation and discovery. A staff of expert teachers guides students to the recognition of their goals in science and encourages each one to participate in individual research—to exceed the level of the required and to aim for the ultimate of his ability. Class field trips and extra experiments indicate a thought-provoking method of devloping future scientists. During the summer of 1966, Valley was one of twenty-five high schools in the nation invited to the National Science Foundation Summer Study Program at the University of Chicago. This honor, along with numerous other awards presented students at annual science fairs, attests the excellence of Valley's science program.
