 Originality In Thought And Expression Valley's English Department is one in which all students may take pride. It has been one of the select few to be chosen by the National Council of Teachers of English as presenting an outstanding curriculum. The goal of this fine department, headed by Miss Mackey, is to motivate each student toward the realization of his full potential—to help him gain an insight info human behavior and experience through literature. Concentration is first brought to bear upon grammar, form, and literary technique, but soon one is past fundamentals and deeply involved in classic and modern literature, as well as in original composition. Honors classes are designed to further stimulate intellectual curiosity and to communicate ideas through exact language and creative self-expressions. The Past With Awareness Of The Present Man has always realized that peace is simply an understanding between nations. This is an age when it is critically important to have a thorough understanding of the interrelation of nations and people. In keeping with these thoughts, the History Department offers courses designed to acquaint the student with the causes and effects of this relationship in the fullest possible way. Ancient and Medieval, World, and American History courses provide the student with a sound background of the events and movements of the past, while Government and Economics familiarize him with the present. By implanting within him a keep insight into the past and present, the History Department feels that each student may meet the future with confidence instead of uncertainty.
